I recently purchased a SCXD and I'm planning on buying a spare set of tubes for it. I've noticed that they are a number of different manufacturers for the type of tubes used in the amp (12AX7 & 6V6).

I was wondering which brand you would recommend and, if you would be so kind, why that brand.

Thanks - Doug

JJ's. They do the trick well for me. I've got them in vintage gear and they hold their own. No quality issues for me. YMMV. 8) Mike

I'm another JJ fan. They work for me . I had them in my HRDlx and they helped the drive channels. I sold it anyway. They came with my Egnater and they sound great in that too.

I replaced the pre-amp tubes in my mars hall tsl 100 tube head with jj's,
then the power tubes with Winged-C's.

look em up!

i have vintage tone in multiples of 10, all over the sound spectrum.
unbelieveable.
im tempted to gut the thing, and rebuild hand-wired, new transformers, rectified maybe, current tube section.
again,
i was blown away by the beauty.
although,
a reknowned amp guy i know hates JJ's.
says, 'they are the '#@$%%^(#$" tubes you can buy'.
maybe what he thinks of as '$#*^^*', we think of as 'old school' ?

I have a Tun-sol power tube and a pair of Ruby Tubes. I guess the only reason I bought these tubes were that they were pretty popular on Musician's Friend. I just wanted to see what a different set of tubes would make this amp sound like. I have to say that I am pleasntly surprised. They add more bite to my sound. I gives the gain more of a growl. Maybe next time I'll try JJ's, but for now I'll enjoy what I have.

I've always been a "if you like the sound of the amp now, stick with the same tubes" kind of guy. I've tried many different brands of tubes in many different amps. Some work better in others. For instance, Electro-Harmonix 12AX7 tubes sound great in Fenders played clean and mildly distorted. But, put them in a hi-gain Marshall, and they sound like crap to me. A friend of mine has a Marshall TSL122 and I slapped some cheap Chinese 12AX7B's in there and he loved them. He said the amp sounded like it did when he first got it. These Chinese tubes had smooth overdrive, but not a very detailed clean sound or deep bass.

I'd get as many tubes as you can and try them out on your own ears to see what you like. There are only 3 tubes in your amp.

Let me be less lazy here.

The Winged-C tubes I speak of, I dont remember who made them.
You can google 'Winged-C Tubes' and find out.
It is a design change. The metal plate that provides electrons to the air inside the tube, in a winged-c tube, WIDENS AND GETS BIGGER AT THE TOP,
allowing, supposedly, MORE electrons to move freely in the tube at any given moment... it really is cool to see them warmed up...

This would mean, in theory, the sound is more clear, more potent, richer, yet cleaner and more powerful, because the tube works more efficiently to produce the same power...

I matched these with all new rectifier and pre-amp tubes, all 12ax7,
but JJ models... the JJ are known for NOT producing the traditional over-the-top distortion @ high gain levels, but for producing a smooth roll from zero gain to high gain, all the way from 0 to 11 on your pre-amp dials.
What this does is huge!
On the Clean(fender wanna-be) channel in my TSL100, this gain comes out sounding like the most pure WHO meets Angus Young loud non-saturation-gain tone I ever imagined. Switch to the
2nd channel, and the bite, low growl of the early rockers, plus some Zepplin esque tone, and David Gilmour Fender strat-solo's sound comes through easy...

The high gain channel has been transformed from a crap-tastic horrid sounding Nu-Metal tone with no character whatsoever, to a golden PROFESSIONAL well-over-the-top yet still Crystal freakin Clean high, and a super power, full tone, yet fuzzy as heck if you want it, lows...

I cant say enough..

I cant play it enough either: because my house is small and my neighbors are close. :(

JJ pre amp tubes,
Winged C Power Tubes:
Replacing Groove Tube El34's, and 12ax7's from someone else.

Winged C's are made by Svetlana.

Personaly i think the whole valve sort-er and re-label-er (cos thats all any of em are, except svetlana and electro harmonix) difference thing is hype. Ive mullards, JJ's, tesla, siemens, brimars and electro harmonix ecc83's kicking around here and at my drummers house. I hear no difference at all. Even power valves, ive siemens, marshall branded svetlana's and EH el34s. For el84s ive GT's, mullards, JJ's and EH's. I cant hear the difference between any of them. Not one iota, and i'm exceptionaly picky.

When you think theres only 3 or 4 factories in the world making valves, there can only be a possible 4 different sounds out of same rated valves.

Advice wise, i'd go with svetlana's. Their cheap enough and bombproof, the screening process such re-label-er companies put them through all but eliminate the baddies.

Just one moment.
Sure, only four or so companies make valve tubes, you say.
I dont know if that is true, but I'll take your word for it!
however,
what is interesting about tubes is,
no matter how they are made,
each one will be different from each other.
i've heard the differences in tubes when switched back and forth in small 5, 10, and 15 watt class A, A/B, or B amps!

its amazing.
however- one thing is certain;
only the most discriminating players are going to care!
