Contacted my local Fender dealer yesterday to talk about what amps he had in the shop, one of which is a Hot Rod Deluxe Python, still in the box. Heard good things as well as bad (never any shortage of people waiting to tell you you're about to make a HUGE mistake, right?) while doing my research last night and basically have one question....

I have read that the limited run of 500 Hot Rod Deluxe Pythons are loaded with a Celestion Vintage 30 while the typical Hot Rod Deluxe comes with an Eminence driver. Correct?

Reason I ask is that the way I run my rig, all I want from my amp is the cleanest tone possible. If it comes with a Vintage 30, I'll need to find a higher wattage speaker to minimize it breaking up. I know, I know, I can change tubes, yada, yada, yada.... but I've had great success with the Eminence Private Jack 50W so that's probably where I'm headed.

Thanks in advance....

The Python Tolex and Celestion speaker will not make it a more reliable amp and the limited runs don't make them any more valuable.
I'd spend the bucks on a DRRI, Super Reverb or Bassman. Just my opinion and it's your money. I went with Egnater. IMHO the cosmetics on the HRD Series are nothing more than turd polish.

I made the HRD mistake. That's why I can speak about. I give honest experiences and don't sugar coat anything. I've been playing for over 40 years ans half of that professionally.

There is a reason why you'll find no shortage of negative comments about the HRD series. YMMV

I am guessing they are more than the regular hotrod. There are alot of people who have had problems with them.I would consider it with caution.I have had a hr , 2 bjr and a bdri with no problems yet.For that kind of money i would be looking for a used bassman or super reverb. They can be had for a decent price.I bought a 59 bassman from 96 and only paid 350 for it and recently bought a 75 super reverb for 625.Both amps sound phenominal. My blues deluxe gets mostly closet time these days and my bjr mostly gets used for rehearsals.

I have a 76 Twin, 74 Champ, a new Egnater and had a 64 Vibrolux Reverb, 73 Bandmaster and a bunch of other amps in between and never had an amp fail like my HRDlx. Three time alone on stage. It was not only the worst Fender amp I've owned, but the worst and most unreliable piece of junk I've ever owned period.

They don't have the reputation they have for no reason. There are web sites dedicated to repairing and modding them. Go figure. Check out other forums too and you'll see what I mean. Go to www.thefenderforum.com and ask the same question there and see what answers you get. Mine would be considered kind.

Your Celestion Vintage 30 is actually rated at 60 watts, not 30 as the name might imply. 8) Mike

Thanks. At least that was an attempt to answer the question.

Cheers, cherokee!

It of course depends on the sound you are after,
For clean the Eminence Cannabis Rex might be a speaker to look into.

The Eminence Cannabis Rex and Swamp Thang were at the top of our list before we settled on the Celeston Vintage 30's for our extension cab project.

The hardest thing is to find some place where you can go to a/b your potential choices.
You really need to listen to them, buying on others recommendation may not prove to be the best way to select a driver.
