Hi,

Suddenly, there is no sound coming from my 410 HRD.

It was working fine last night at practice. But I got home from work this evening, and plugged in and no sound. It comes on and the tubes all seem fine. I checked to see if they were in good and tight and all seems fine there. I can't figure it out. I'm no amp tech and have very limited knowledge of amps. But this is currenly my only amp and I'm havin' an extreme guitar noise jones. Not to mention another practice in a couple days. Does anyone have any idea what might cause this??

Thanks,

MJ

When you take it out of standby do you hear the crackle or hiss that generally is there when the amp is on?

My first thought would be check all connections and cables. Even the speaker jack on the back of the amp.

When I first turn it on and let it warm up, and then take it out of standby, it makes the crackle sound. After that I'll hear a very faint crackling, but absolutely no volume or sound other than that. If I put my ear to the back of the amp, I can hear it humming like it usually does when it's on, but no sound from the speakers. I've been transporting it back and forth to practice for several weeks now, and my first thought was that something vibrated loose. I've checked all the tubes and every connection that I can think of.

Thanks,

MJ

Test the speakers first to make sure they're okay and all the connections. Then check the power and preamp tubes. Nine times out of ten it's just the tubes, or cold solder joints on the tube sockets or the the 5 watt cement resistors. It's a little rare to lose a power tranny but you never know. Some of the crackling could be noisy preamp tubes of filter caps. If it's the tubes, I'd steer clear of GT's. Anything more than that, I'd let a tech give it the once over.

I gave up on my HRDlx and bought an Egnater Rebel 20. It's built light years better than ant HRD series and sounds awesome too.

Hi, thanks for the response.

If it is the preamp tubes, would that make it not have any sound at all other than the crackling? There is absolutely no sound coming from these speakers other than the very faint (almost non-existant) crackling sound. Also, is there any brand of tubes you'd recommend?

Thanks again,

MJ

I'm still leaning towards the power tubes. They'll kill you sound completely if they go. For tubes I like JJ's, Tung Sols and Jan Phillips. Eurotubes sells whole JJ retube kits for your amp. www.eurotubes.com

It's hard to tell what's up with your amp. These are generally just starting points. Anyone who gigs and has a tube amp should always carry a spare set of tubes and fuses. I hope it's just the tubes. If it's still under warranty, Fender will cover everything but the tubes and speakers.

Yeah, if it were me I'd take it by the shop before spending $80+ on a set of tubes. You say the power tubes are good - you mean they're glowing when the amp is on? I've had a power tube go, but not both at the same time. Even with one tube the amp still worked - just broke up early.

Just wanted to add +1 on the JJ tubes from Eurotubes. I was very pleased with both the service and the results.

Hi MJ, like Supro indicated it could be any number of things causing this failure. If you have verified that the speakers and their wiring is okay( you can do this using a 9 volt battery + to the speaker plug tip, - to the plug sleeve while listening and watching for cone movement), I'd swap the phase inverter with the pre amp tube furthest to the right(as the amp is viewed from the rear). Warm up the amp, take it off standby, with the volume controls turned up a bit gently tap the power tubes and see if there is any commotion. Be sure to try all controls before and after this test. Just an idea. Good Luck! ART

Okay, I changed out the power tubes....no change at all. How do I go about checking the speakers? This amp is barely a year old. Until the last few weeks, its always been in my living room. It's been very pampered. It's never seen a gig and it's never really been cranked up very loud. I've always used a volume box plugged into the effects loop to keep the volume tolerable for at home practice. I checked all the connections to the speakers and they seem fine to me. I really don't see how the speakers could be bad. But who knows. Any ideas on how to check the speakers would be appreciated. After that, I guess I'll be taking it to the shop and see what the tech says.

thanks,

MJ

Be sure it's plugged into the speaker jack and not the extension speaker jack. It's real easy to miss it. Could need a trip to the tech.

I've said it a million and two times, the HRD Series amp are just poorly designed, cheaply made and are prone to a handful of annoying problems. It makes no difference how nice you treat it.

That's why I sold mine and went with Egnater. I've been gigging with it and rehearsing/practicing with it for the past couple of months and it's been flawless.

I know of not one gigging musician who never had a problem with one. I only gigged mine a few months and got tired of running it back to a tech. It failed on 3 separate occasions on stage no less.

Well, I checked the speakers and they're working fine. So It's off to the shop. I think I'll take your advice and get rid of this amp. If I'm having problems with it already, I'd hate to see what happens with it under heavy use . I appreciate everyones input and advice.

thanks alot,

MJ

If you just play at home, I'd look at either a DRRI or an Egnater Rebel 20. You can dial the Rebel down to 1 watt and still have incredible tone.

If you need something powerful and you like the 4-10 arrangement , you might want to check out a used 59 bassman reissue. It will smoke a deville in tone and reliability .Seriously.
