Im going to dreamland now. Its late at night. The door bell rings. Its 11 PM , who could that be. Im up that late becouse Im recording a song on my16 track and I just cant get that lead guitar part down, But I brake away to see who is at the door.WA , Its JIMMY PAGE> His cars broken down and he needs to use the phone . Im a nice guy and I let him in. As we set around and talk , waiting for his friend to come and get him , He see"s all the music gear . I tell him Im in a jam and with that lead guitar part , and he like the basic song. He say"s hay let me have a go at it. But Jimmy my gear ,its not what your in too. Kinda cheap, ya know. He looks at me , picks up my Tele .One of the first Highway one's. Hay I like the neck on this thing he say's Plug's it into my old VOX. The one I paid a lot of money for and dont play that much becouse It's been in the shop 10 time's in the last 10 years and and I dont really think it sound's that good , Im a Fender man you know. But thtas the one Jimmy plugged into. He dials in a tone that I never could get out of the thing. and after 2 or 3 trys he nails the track. I stand there with that look on my face. I ask he how he did that. He says , Ive played en all man. You should have seen the stuff we used on the frist LZ cuts. We didnt have much of a buget and not a lot of time. We just had to make it work. Well his friend shows up and he leave's . And my song is a numer one hit becouse of that lead part from that un named guitar player on track 5. Then I wake up and relize I didnt drain the caps on my HTRDLX befor doing the latest mods I read about on the net. Ill never do that agian!

But you could tell it was a dream, because lead guitar parts don't make records into hits.

:D

Vocal harmonies made pretty much all them beatles records hits. We as guitar players predominantly hear and focus on the guitar parts.

I totally agree with your assesment of the beatles.Their harmonies stick out to me as being the one thing that dominated and sold their records.I also agree with Slapchops assesment that guitar part dont make hit records. There are a few exceptions and to me when i think of daytripper , i hear that opening guitar riff.It is one of the most recognised riff from that era.I would say the same with "i feel fine", but you may be right, it might just be the guitar player in me.To me the opening riff is the "hook " that brings you in for Daytripper.

The intro to "Daytripper" is just the intro to me and not the hook. It makes it recognizable but It's the lyrics and vocal melody and harmonies that I would consider the hook. Just me though.

Well, the lick is a good one, but that's not the real hook of the song. If you're in a car with a woman (or women) of a certain age and that song comes on the radio, her eyes will light up and she'll smile... but when they sing:

"She was a DAAAAAA-ayyaaay Trippah! One way ticket, yeah!"

... she's right there singing along.

Good point slapchop.I do agree with that.Just goes to show ya that the contents of a song has to be multifaceted to appeal to a wide range of people. The Beatles were probably one of the most diverse group in history IMHO.Great vocals, great riffs, awesome songwiting and the list goes on and on.

Budglo the singer in my last band was a tremendous writer, he played drums, bass and guitar all poorly. He could write 7 great songs a day though. We recorded 3 cds one year. He'd write the thing in 2 days. We'd rehearse em for two and a half months to get tight and record em complete in five days. Working with him really got me understanding perspectives on music. It also helped me understand how various instruments have to fit into a band and what space they need. I was constantly pushing riffs and ideas at him to have them naysayed. The reply being 'nah ruins the drums' or nah it knackers the 'bass beat'. It got me to understand how insignificant the instrument i love is when viewed in the big picture. I had to totally change my outlook on guitar just to stay in a 2bit pop punk band. I could play like satriani, if i didnt know how to apply myself to a bassist, drummer and keyboard player, i wouldnt get anywhere.

Great riffs are great, for guitarists mainly. A great song is great for everyone.

Good read niki. a song really is a team effort isnt it?When you look at the creativity of the Beatles or Pink Floyd or Hendrix it boggles the mind.True geniuses in their craft.
