Well, I figured if I posted my opinion on marshalls there would be some backlash. I wonder if the marshall dealer in my place of residence at the time didn't buy a bunch of factory rejects or refurbs or something. I'm not gonna mention the retailers name. I purchased many instrument there too and had only had problems with the marshalls. Remeber this is only my opinion and I gaurentee you'll never change it cause I'll never spend my $$$ on a marshall again.
I reaserched the hell outta the blues JR. I like fender an I believe they make a good product for the money. A tube amp is crucial to my sound i need the explosive dynamics of tubes to complete my sound. With the wide range of preamps and processers the amp only needs to have tubes and be reliable. I had hoped the BJ. had more distortion so it could stand on its own at a rock gig, but for less than $500 (479 brand new) I can purchase a whole lotta distortion boxes. And true to its name a BJ. will do blues better than any amp I own.

Having one bad amp does not mean the entire production of that model is bad. This is a good, cheap, tube amp. If you are not a professional, having something like a Super Reverb etc is total overkill. Not to mention, not everyone can play one where they live etc.

Nevin its not just one bad amp. Theres a hell of alot of people that feel the same way. Its either because
1 we hear more and demand more through being attentive to what we play.

2 We play terribly and couldnt get a decent sound out of the absolute best gear in the world.

Now i'm not starting any debate on how who plays, simply stating a little known/recognised fact of peoples guitar playing journey. I'd also offer the 3rd amp user
3, The user who is happy with mid level sounding stuff, or who doesnt hear or doesnt realize how it sounds.

Myself and a few others arent happy with the amp, but are with other amps. The only real way this debate will be solved is to suck it and see. For the OP to borrow a Bjr and try it out for a month. Really have time to wear the novelty factor out of it.

My experience of the amp is very similar. The reverb and treble controls dont do anything at low volume. The master volume maxes at 5. The amp sounds muddy unless its set between 4-5 with the treble on full.

Thanks for the back-up and confirmation.

It was beginning to feel really cold and lonely - if you get my drift.

I wasn't going to look at this topic again - but got curious.

Your description of your experience was right on - as far as it went.
I had forgotten to mention the ineffectiveness of the tone controls.

Just for "the record" - that Blues Junior was the only amp I have ever had any real problems out of - and that goes back to, and includes, my very first amp - a little Kay solid state that my mother bought for me. That little Kay amp saw some very hard use and very hard treatment. Some despise anything "Kay". But it got me started, and kept going, all those years ago. I kept that one, and it even still works today. (unlike some pricey name brands that I won't mention)

IMHO your advise to try one out long enough to get over the "honeymoon" period is good advise. Use it long enough to let "the new" wear off.

IMHO - it's not that "neighbors suck" - just the ones you have at this time.

If it were me, I would try to find a new place to live with better neighbors.

Your post made me think how fortunate I am to have the neighbors I have.
I have cranked my CT SE when I was breaking in the speakers - with no complaints. I asked the closest neighbor later - his comment was, yes he heard it and enjoyed the music.

I think it was a random act of vandalism. I think? Quite a coincidence though. most my neighbors like the band and the music. I think?
I took off and played my JR. a while the last hour or so and I still think its a great amp. I also whent to harmony central an reviewed the reliabilty rating. It's still is hoovering at arouind 8 (on a scale of 1-10).

I don't think I ever posted a review of my Blues Junior at Harmony Central - or anywhere else, that I can think of.

But I guess you can only go with the information you can gather at the time.

I hope it works out for you and that you don't have any reason to regret it later, like some of us have.

If you find that it's overheating your power tubes, the EL84s, there is a bias mod posted on the Internet. You'd just need to do some searching to find it.

Best of Luck :)

I remember my first apartment. I'm huddled over a 40watt valvestate one evening playing the wind cries mary at around 0.0001 watt so's not to disturb the neighbours. All of a sudden theres this tremendous banging and the neighbour shouting 'TURN IT THE ???? UP, I CANT HEAR IT PROPERLY'. Looked out the window and theres this longhaired biker leaning over his balcony banging on my balcony doors.
That started a very beautiful relationship of me playing on request for him and him buying me beer.
Never abused it and only played loud when he asked, everything stayed sweet. Never had a neighbour that good since. Though the current lot asked for whiskey in the jar a couple o times.
