Well, As Ive said before< Im the owner of two HTRDLX amps. One Ive had for over five years , no problems. . The other I Bought before the price hike,I see the price has came back down a little bit. Anyway, Ive started Gigging with the new one and leaveing the old one as a back up. Nothing is wrong with the old one. But the new one is new and has the warrenty ,Five years .I Might as well be useing it. If there is somthig wrong I need to know within that five years rite. Let me say ,The two amps sound very very very close in sound. I think the old one may have an edge with the speaker being good and broke in. But thats it. I know a lot of folks have had trouble with em . Thats not me. I have a lot of amps and have never been shy about liking some other brands. Im a Fender man first. They have the sound I like, And with a strat, Mmmmmm, So good! I mike on stage and dont really need 40 watts. I use a the dreded drive channel a lot and like it. I think it sounds good and becouse no one will use it. I sound a little differant. I like that. All my guitar gods have one thing in common. Its not the guitar or amp they use. Its the way they use what they have. Its in the hands man. some of my amps are old and Im not really a fan of the the old stuff. Im one who beleaves things have Improved over the years. Hats off to Fender . I feel like Ive got my worth out of all my Fender gear. My strat and tele are two guitars I will ner part with. And I always like to plug them in to th Fender HOT ROD DELUXE amps.

I couldn't agree with you more. I recently purchased a used HRDX that was, for all intents and purposes, brand new. I plug my Tele into the drive channel, with the gain set low and the volume high. My Gretsch goes into the clean channel. Great sounds emanate from an amp that seems to be sturdy and, judging by the reports of some, wholly reliable. I haven't made modifications, and I don't plan to -- until, of course, the tubes die.

I think these amps have an unfair reputation. No matter which amp manufacturer you choose to buy an amp from, you may eventually have problems. It's the nature of valve amps. That being said, Fender has sold a gargantuan number of HRDXs for one reason: they're reasonably priced, good sounding amps. Heaps and heaps of musicians, both amateur and professional, use them. They may not have the prestige of the Tweed Twins, nor the "classic" sound of the '65 Reissues, but they do sound good in their own way. And that's precisely what I want in an amp.

Thank you for posting this.

I had a Hot Rod Deluxe for a few years, and never had a single problem with it. I once used the HRD as a head into a 4-12 cab, cranked it up and loved it; although it was pretty loud! Then, I downsized to a Blues Junior and never had a problem with that amp.

Today, things are different. I was "ampless" and bought a new Blues Junior right before the huge price hike. It sounds the same as my old Blues Junior, but the black plastic tube sockets are garbage. I'll be taking it to the shop for a warranty repair/replacement. I assume that Fender received a bad batch of tube sockets. If Fender authorizes the local shop to replace the sockets with better ones, then I'll be happy.

If the same black plastic sockets are used, then I'll consider selling the amp. Fender's entry-level Hot Rod tube amps are great for the money, but if they keep raising the prices then it would be better in the long run to pay a bit more for a higher quality amp. That said, I'll always be a fan of Fender amps... I just wish I could afford one of their "top of the line" models. I'd love to have a Bassman RI or a 65 TRRI, but I don't need that much power.

I'm in !
My HRDeluxe is great.
A tech/teacher/bandmate was the one who gave me GAS for these years back. He had an "in" at Fender & was quite the "techie".
He had a first year production that really never had any problems.
He was the first one to warn me (& show me) about the PC board &
the way the pots were attatched, as well as the input jacks.

Sure it's not an 80Lb. Ampeg (PTP) with a lockdown Reverb, that you can throw around, (if you could lift it !)
But, with a little cautious care, the Hot Rod Deluxe is a good amp.

...and I use the Drive channel too.

And here's a big thanks for the three different Strats I've owned: Strat Plus; 68 Reverse, and my current guitar, an American Deluxe. Nothing sounds better than a strat through a DRRI. What a fantastic amp! (not to hassle you HRDlx folks).

My HRDLX broke down within days of getting it home. I traded it in for a DRRI which died within a few days. Never could get the rattle out of either model. I own the Fender 300T - never able to get everything working all the time on that either. By all reports the Sunn models are still chugging away.

Not brand bashing - my brother has a HRDLX from the mid-90's that sounds fantastic, and a Strat that is beautiful. I live out in the sticks and I acutally gig my stuff, so reliablity is more important then impeccable studio tone. Everyone is different.

Wow that simply sucks.
It really doesn't matter about "the sticks" either because no
matter where you gig, you're still away from home, so to speak.
And without an equipment truck with back-up gear at the back door,
you're screwed till the next set.
I hope your next choice of equipment is less faulty, or at the very least, has less issues.

Which reminds me to get that extra set of tubes to have "on hand".
Even with the luck I've had so far with the HRDeluxe, there's nothing worse than adding "I meant to do that" to the set list.

Hope you find a good HRD, or ask brother to borrow his for the time being !
That's what brothers are for !

I've got a Deville and I like the drive channel on it. However, the other day I made the mistake of plugging in a Super Reverb at the store and there's no going back once you've done that. Currently have my HRDv for sale to raise money for the SRRI.

I've also had very good luck with my HRD. I actually had one for several years and felt I didn't need it when I got my Vibro King Custom, so I sold it. Not long after that I found that the VKC which is the most awe inspiring amp I ever played, is often too loud and I missed having an HRD. I ended up buying a new Tweed HRD and never plan to get rid of it. Never had any problem out of either of my HRD's. Oh, but I still kept the Vibro King too.
