so we all know how dreadful the heat from those upside down tubes can be in small combo's, so i was thinking of ways to beat the heat. most people would use a fan, but maybe its simpler than that.

i figure, why not just sit the amp upside down? that way the heat will rise AWAY from the chassis. problem solved, with one exception of course...some amps have the input jack on top. in that case, you'd have to tilt the amp back, and using an elbow plug would help alot.
one concern regarding this...especially when tilted back, there will be a good amount of heat trapped in the bottom of the cabinet. would this be bad for the speaker in any way? if not, i'd say case closed.

another thing could be sitting the amp on its side if you can't go upside down. its probably not as effective, and also might have a unique side effect (haha no pun intended). now the tubes will be in line, meaning that all but one will be experiencing extra heat from the other tubes below them. that can't be good for tubes, right? i mean, they're hot enough as is, but for a tube to be subjected to 2x or 3x extra heat, i'd imagine that'd be pretty bad.

let me know your thoughts on this, i kinda wanted to get feedback from all you guru's before i try it myself LOL. i know it's so simple, there have probably been people who thought of this already, but i couldn't really find any account of such when i googled it.

Thats not a bad idea at all, very lateral thinking!

But it depends on what amp you do it on, Couldnt really get away with it with any of the hot rods since the controls are on the top, but maybe the twins (But you'd have to do somthing about the handle)

Mind you with the same thinking, any amp with controls on top i suppose you could put it on its side maybe.

Personally im a man with a fan, its cheap and easy, plus if you use a big one it also blows cold air onto your back too, which is mighty revitalizing during a gig. (Also it gives you a great look on stage if you have long hair 8) )

I never had heat related issues with any of my old Fenders, just the HRDlx.
My Twin is a 76 and never had a failure of any kind, same with my 74 Champ.
If you chassis mount the tubes it might help. Single sided boards and marginal components really shouldn't be in tube amps. You could just blow a fan into the amp and blow the dust and dirt out of the chassis once in a while.

Yeah it's a neat idea. The amps in the early 50's used that type of set up. My '55 Ohahu is that type. To retro fit a Fender chassis, with the angled face, could be plenty inconvenient. And what about all that dust and fur balls that seem to find their way into the bottom of combo cabs? You know, Danelectro designed an early 50's Twin 12 with the speakers in either corner and the chassis mounted diagonally. ART

I don't see why you couldn't turn a Hot Rod upside-down. All you'd have to do is cut a couple of 2x4s to keep the control plate off the ground, and use a cord with a right-angle jack. Might be worth a try, but it also could be a massive pain in the $@!.

Seriously, nobody tweaks their amps while they play? Maybe Fender should just fix the heat related issues on the Hot Rod series. LOL

If you are really worried about it mount a muffin fan into the case.
Doubt it will make any difference, heat is not the main issue, cheap components are.

And poor design. :?

+1 and with the tubes in some of them, it's a torture chamber for the speakers!

Hey msvolpe, what about the fire hazard of the any component sparks? A nice stainless steel shield and asbestos pad? No, really, your idea has merit, but the application of a retro fit maybe kind of shabby. On the other hand, a chassis and faceplate designed for this type of set up, would certainly function as you intend. ART
