I'm on the Champ 600 bandwagon. I bought one for home practice, put a Boss '65 Deluxe Reverb pedal in front and have been having fun ever since. Now I use this set-up for some recording. Great sound.
The Vox DA5 and Roland Micro-Cube are good bedroom amps and they make excellent effects line-ins in front of larger amps as well.
If you are learning about tone, then the Champ 600 Reissue is a great place to start. :D

I have to agree with the Champ 600.
I paid $200.00 at a local dealer.
The tone is fantastic, well worth every penny. :D

Champ's a winner, the Epi VJ is terrific and dirt cheap, the G-DEC series is worth a look, as is that new Crate Profiler 5 mini-amp modeler with the direct record via USB. So many choices, only one bedroom!

For a bedroom amp, the G-Dec 30 cannot be beat.

I would not buy a tube amp for bedroom playing because: (a) even a 5W tube amp is too loud for the bedroom, especially when you crank it to get that just on the verge of breaking up tone; (b) you get more tones to play with when you have a solid-state / digital amp.

I guess my point is that when you're in your bedroom playing you want to quickly dial up tones, and an amp like the G-DEC 30 (or a pod) is perfect for that.

Of course, just my opinion.

If you can get your hands on a vintage champ or Vibrochamp it will blow away the tone of the little china made 600 and for not a whole lot more $$$$

I tried a 600 and got tube rattle and hum and took it back.

the pro jr. is another great small amp with decent tone.

I use a red knob Champ 12. You can probably find one on EBAY for around $125-150. Its a tube amp. Gets low enough for bedroom practice and loud enough to play w/a drummer.

I have a Frontman 25R, and I love it. I got it at Buzzo's in Geneseo, NY for a nice price. I was initially just going for a 15R, but he had me demo them both, and that was all it took. :P

+1 on the Vox DA-5 it offers various modeling combinations as well as the power output can be adjusted. The amp can be ran at 5, 1.5, or .5 amps. It has an additional input for MP3 along with a mic and Headphone out. Even set at .5 this little Vox can get plently loud for a bedroom player, check it out.
