I just picked up a crate V5... I know crate doesn't have the best reputation, but this amp has a really sweet tone. Two tubes that are fully cranked all the time... no frills, just a volume, tone, and gain knob. I really like it.

The Crate V-series has a very good rep. A lot of pros play them including Robert Randolph.

I thought about getting a V series amp when I was looking for a affordable 5 watt recording/practice amp. If Fender had not RI the Champ 600, I probably would have gone with one.

I have also read on a few forums that have specs for moding V series

For the bedroom, from my experience, the best way to go is a G-DEC since it has a headphone out (and they sound incredible in phones), a fully finished, fully tweakable sound that can be Fletcher-Munson compensated for the low listening level, and the adjustable compression goes a long way to giving you the same compression/dynamics of a cranked amp but without the wall-flattening levels. Throw in a free terrific rhythm section to jam to and you're good to go.

Even tiny amps like the 600 and the VJ don't sound that hot at super low levels--they need to be juiced a bit to get going, and they have no headphone out to mollify the whining GF.

If you haven't heard how good the cyber engine is in the G-DEC series, including the really quick, fun and cheap ($179 or less) G-DEC Jr. you should. As a music producer and engineer and Fender fans for lo these many years, I testify they do BF clean and slightly cranked very well, Marshall not very good, and tweeds a mild thumbs up. But add in the killer efx (really top notch), the utility and the jam trax, and you're future audiences and bandmates will thank Dog that Fender made you jam to a merciless steady beat. It's really good for your chops!

Roland and Vox both put out little battery operated (can plug them in to) amps that are fabulous sounding.

Yeah, the Vox DA-5 and DA-15 are excellent and generally earn higher marks than the also excellent and popular Roland Microcube series. Definitely all 3 worth auditioning.

I recently bought a Champion 600 cause my bassman, Twin & even my blues jr. were all too loud for my little music room. The 600 is cool cause I can turn it up, soak the tubes and control the tone on the guitars, all without suffering any further hearing loss. Sounds great.

I prefer a Marshall Major with a couple of 4X12 cabs... Seriously, a Fender Deluxe Reverb, G-DEC30, or even a Super Reverb, would be great choices. Currently my bedroom amp of choice is a Marshall Dual Reverb 50watt with two 1X12 cabs. What's nice about this setup is that it can go from a whisper, practice level, to the roar of performance levels; all in one package.

I agree with the Champ 600 posters, but for recording, this one has me kind of interested -

Maybe it's the beginning of amps having a USB output ? 8)

I think that a small, 5w tube (EL-84s) amp with those features would REALLY be nice. :?:

:D Fender G-Dec Jr Amp is my choice with the new Line 6 Pocket Pod between amp and guitar. With this set up you can dial in most any sound you would ever need. And both the Fender G-Dec Jr and Line 6 Pocket Pod can hook to your computer for endless presets, backing tracks, and user settings. Pocket Pod amp settings can be adjusted right on screen of computer with free VYZEK Pocket Pod download.
