I did and like the results. I also upgraded the PT and speaker. I installed a Mercury Magnetics FBFPP-S and a Weber California speaker. I rebiased the amp for 6L6's. It sounds awesome.

I'd say that "expensive" is a relative term. I got the amp used for about $800, in really great condition. The PT was about $165 and the speaker was $90. I spoke with Paul at Mercury Magnetics before doing the power transformer (PT) mod. He convinced me it would make a noteworthy difference, and it did. The Weber is a California ceramic 10" with aluminum dome. I actually like ceramics more than alnico's, they have more headroom and are cheaper.

Rebiasing the amp was no problem because I have a rebias kit from eurotubes that makes it really easy. And they (Fender) did the reissue for this amp right because it has a bias pot! Calculating what the current should be for 6L6's versus 6V6's is just a matter of some simple algebra.

The current draw formula is (watts divided by plate voltage) times 70%. 6V6's produce (14 watts/440VDC) X 0.7 = 22milli amps.

For 6L6's they produce 25 watts so (25/440) X 0.7 = 39ma.

The 6L6's increased my clean headroom substantially. This is a great little amp. You can always pop the 6V6's back into it and rebias it if you want to tame it back down a little bit. Lots of players also swap out the 6V6's with EL84's using a special 8 to 9 pin pentode tube adapter. That tames it down even more. It depends on what you're looking for and your style, etc.

Here's a site that has lots of mods for Princeton's:

Good Luck!
