Sweet amp! Note the class-A operation, distinct from the Super Champ.

I thought the new Super Champ (XD) was basically the same as the new Vibro Champ (XD) but with more power, channel switching and a larger speaker?

Please explain?

Are you referring to the "gain" knob?
I have read in another forum that in both amps, the gain is a solid state circuit overdriving a 12AX7.

It seems like the better deal would be to get the Super Champ XD for only $50 bucks more.

In the VC, the 12AX7 HAS to be a gain element as single-ended class-A amps require no phase inverter. Thus we have a pure tube amp with a solid-state modeler in front same as if it was a Pocket Pod in front of a Champ 600.

In the SC, Bill M sez the 12AX7 is being used as a phase inverter (though he doesn't know for sure until he gets his hands on one) which means the SC is a true hybrid class A/B push/pull circuit with an all solid-state preamp stage.

Thus two completely different amps. Two different sounds.

I don't get mine until Thursday. Does anyone know if you must choose a "Voice"? I see that the knob runs from 1 to 16, but there is no zero or off. I know there will be times that I just want to use the VC as a basic tube amp without DSP.

I know on the SC, Channel One is dedicated to Blackface, and Channel Two has the full 16 models available. But the VC doesn't have channels, so you just choose one of the 16. Don't believe you get a bypass option.

Maybe I should have been more patient and done a little more research.

Apparently, the voices are in the pre-amp. I wonder how it works. It probably isn't VTI like in the Cyber series amps.

The voices are all based on the FM DSP series. So just imagine those voices with a 6V6 heating pad instead of a cold, hard solid-state power stage.

The VCXD does not have the option to bypass the voicing. The voices all sound very good The DSP section can be eliminated by reducing the volume to zero. The effects are rather good though. I'm going to try a Jensen C8R today and see how it compares with the Weber ceramic 8S I have in there now. I may try an alnico in the neverending quest for "tone" Great amp!

So you can run the Super Champ XD just like a clean Fender amp without DSP? I'm looking for an awesome sounding clean amp to run pedals through....

No, like I say, channel 1 is dedicated to BF only. No bypass. And in channel 2 you get 1 of 16 models to choose from. So there's no bypassing the DSP.

Wow, lots of questions & debate over these cool new amps. This should help:

With the Vibro-Champ XD, set the VOICE knob to "4" and you are getting a clean Blackface preamp tone with no compression or anything added. If you turn the FX knob down, it sounds just like an old 60s Champ or Vibro-Champ.

With the Super-Champ XD, select the first channel and it sounds like an old Super-Champ set clean.

Either way, you can turn the clean-sounding amp way up and get output tube distortion and speaker distortion.

Enjoy!

Shane

Why is the manual not available on-line?

I just ordered one of these - can't wait!
