Just for fun. I was wondering what is the loudest amp you have ever played and, more importantly, had the balls to "turn up to 11"?

For me there's a two part answer. I was screwing around with a friend's Mesa Triple Rectifier (played through a Marshall 4x12 cab) and we got it up to about "8". That was unholy loud.

The only thing that comes close in my mind is a cranked Fender twin. It is by far the loudest combo I have ever, ever run across. It was soil-your-pants loud.

If you turn a Pro J to "12" and play a Les Paul through it, you will sound like Neil Young. And it's really not that loud -- I should know, I do it all the time!

I absolutely couldn't believe how loud that dimed Twin was. Nothing compares to that, in my mind. Marshalls and the like look loud, and they are, but a Twin doesn't appear to be a particularly imposing amp. Until you turn it all the way to "10", that is.

My 100 watt 76 Twin through 4x12 extension cabinet. Part of the reason I have Tinnitus today. Be careful kiddies. Even 15 watters can damage your hearing permanently.

That's worth repeating :!:

And it doesn't take maxing the volume out to damage your hearing.

What is a safe level ?

I don't know. Lower than what I normally played at, apparently.
The lows now sound like I'm under water, and what highs I can still hear. sound "tinkly" - for lack of a better descriptive term. And it just gets worse over time. Another example; I can't hear the telephone ring anymore, when I'm a couple of rooms away from it. Does that sound like "Fun" to anyone?

Like the man said - Be Careful !! Once it's gone - it's gone !!
I keep praying for it to come back - but so far - no.

And to answer the question - what was the loudest amp I ever played?
A Peavey Stereo Chorus 2x12 that had 160 watt output. And I think it was probably close to maxed out at "1.5" to "2". The volume on it was one of those that seemed to be "all or nothing". More like an off and on switch than any volume "control".

I dimed my 83 Twin Amp on a number of occasions-- more than twenty years ago-- playing outside with a high school band I played with. We seemed to find volume to be more important than substance. I totally echo 63supro: be careful, my hearing isn't all it should be.

Can someone describe the sound of a dimed twin? Also does anyone use an auttenuator?

My Twin Amp was 100 watts, volume "10" on the lead channel. I think the only reason I survived with most of my hearing is because we were playing outside in the country, I would imagine. The drummer bought a PA system just so he could mic his kit, which wasn't loud enough. Please keep in mind, I was 15, this was the 80's, and we were playing Motley Crue and Black Sabbath covers, with a few original jams thrown in just for fun. It was the most fun anyone can imagine having, as I think back.

Painfully loud. Mine stays clean til around 8. After that it's just a slight breakup. It mind numbing through a 4x12.

I second that, I use one in our rehearsal space and its crazy through a 4x12. Too much.
