Was playing my pro Jr, and all of a sudden the volume would randomly drop and the sound would get buzzy. I had the volume set at 3. I replaced the tubes with JJ and the same problem. I tested it out again, then I started to smell something burning. I opened it up and noticed this green capacitor smoking and has burn marks. Is my Pro Jr screwed or can I fix this myself?

You let the magic smoke out!!

Unless you know your way around an amp, let a professional handle it. It may not just be the cap that went bad. Something else may have cooked the cap. There are lethal voltages in there. If it's under warranty, send it in.
It's probably not too big of a deal.

That's why I preach against the Hot Rod Series.

Man I guess you are right. The amp is only three years old and was not even playing it that loud. You think a power tube went bad and took out a couple of caps and resistors or could it be the transformer?

Now, I have to search for the receipt to get warranty service. Warranty on amps is 5 years?

Man this sucks... :x

I sold my HRDlx last week. Mine started after couple of months. The warranty is 5 years. Check with the store you bought it from. The local guy I got my GDec 30 from had the receipt on the computer in his database. He printed out a new one. My original GDec took a dump after a few months too and had to be replaced. They don't make them like they used to.

I guess so. My 20 something year old Fender Super Champ has been very reliable and faithful over the years. I purchased her new back in 1983 from Guitar Center when I graduated from High School. Never had any problem with her. I still have the original footswitch and I stocked up on the rare 6C10 tube.
I guess Fender don't make amps that last anymore.

Anyone know the function of the C11 capacitor is? That is the one that was fried on my amp.

I have a schematic in pdf format.

edited for: I found you a link for the schematic. It's posted below.
(it's better to not post an email address these days)

According to this schematic, C11 is in series with R26.
They form a "jumper" across the output of the two EL84 tubes.

If R26 is burned too - R26 shows 270 ohms.

In the notes:
All resistors 1/2 watt unless otherwise noted.
All capacitors 400V unless otherwise noted.

C11 shows 2200 pf with a 1 KV rating

Best bet is take it back to the dealer first, since it's still under warranty.

Good Luck !

If you repair it yourself and it's under warranty, you'll void the warranty.

Go to www.thefenderforum.com join up and ask there. There are a lot of amp builders there that could help you.

Thanks for looking out all. I was stupdily thinking of attempting to fix it myself because I couldn't find the sale invoice which was needed for warranty service. I called Musicianfreind if they would have a copy of the invoice and they have :D They quickly sent the copy by FAX, and now getting ready to have it serviced by an authorized Fender Service Center.

I'm still curios to what went wrong with my amp. It wasn't like I had it cranked at full volume when the problem happened. The volume was at 3 and all of a sudden the volume randomly dropped followed by a popping type sound. I figured it was the power tubes. So I replaced it with a new pair of JJs and the problem persisted. I opened it up and discovered the C11 cap was smoking and fried. I've been reading lots of problems with these amps....to bad, as this amp sounds great.

It's tied in with the power tubes and your output transformer. Could be a lot of things, from possibly a shorted power tube, power supply problem, output tranny problem. You need to check voltages and component values. Just replacing a burnt component without finding out why can cause even more damage. If you lift a trace while changing a component, you'll have even more headaches.

I'd still take it to a tech. A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing.
