I was working with a friend who was trying to insert a steel guitar preamp directly into the power amp section of a 200 watt amp. The results weren't up to his expectations (low output), so I started looking through the schematics for both the preamp he'd bought and the amp he had.

Something occured to me that I want to run by any of the amp builders / repair techs.

The signal hitting the power amp section of a given amp has already been designed to do so at, say, Level X. The power amp is just putting the final grunt to it. It stands to reason that a line-level signal wouldn't necessarily be of the same level as the signal the power amp is expecting from its own preamp. If that's the case, tapping in to an amp's power amp section is not the same as a dedicated stand-alone power amp, right?

That's the only explanation I could think of for why a stated 200-watt amp wasn't performing like 200 watts.

Anyone have any thoughts on the matter?
