Hi folks

I've been thinking for a while about getting a Blues Jr, and had a general plan in place for buying one. Part of this involved selling my car and buying one that has cheaper running costs(fuel prices are horrendous here). I factored in buying the BJ as part of this, but got more for my car than i expected, and paid less than i intended for my new car. Thus, i am £600(about $1100)better off. Result! So, the HRD over here is about £500 and the BJ is £350. Accepting that i think the BJ is a fantastic amp, and the 15 watt output is just about perfect for my needs, i can't help thinking about the HRD now. Its 40w is more than double the output, but i recently sold a 50w Marshall JCM that i had for nearly ten years. What a nice problem to have. Any suggestions?

Regards

Marge

If you have the means to buy either amp, I would say try them both out and buy the one that sounds best to you.

I have a blues jr and it's great for practice but I also have a blues deluxe reissue and it's the best amp I ever owned. It's more expensive but if you're looking for a kick butt blues sound with channel switching and reverb......it's the one.

Hot Rod Deluxe! Superior Clean Tone, with Effects Loop and ext speaker output, which the BJ does not have.

You really need to try both. The HRDLX will have a richer, fuller tone, but might be too loud depending on your needs.

If you can live without reverb (with a good amp you don't need it other than as an effect for certain styles of music) I'd recommend the Pro Jr and a decent mic like a Sennheiser e609 or e906 (my choice to use with my vintage style tweed amp).

I think the Pro Jr sounds better than the Blues Jr.

I'd go with the Blues Jr. Do a search and you will find tons of reliability issues with the Hot Rod Deluxe. I know, I've had some problems with mine. It died in the first 3 months I've owned it. I only gigged with it a few times.

I love the Blues Junior. I've had one for a couple of weeks and played a lot. It's all tube, and gets fat at low loudness using the preamp volume control and fat switch. With the volume at 9 1/2, reverb at about 2 1/2 -3, master at 2, treble at 5 1/2 and the mid and bass at 11, it's a tremendous tone at low volumes and with tube thickness. I can't describe it but it's night and day to the solid state I've played. All tube gives you tube fatness in the preamp and power amp stages, and using the volume control allows the amp to get cooking at low loudness levels.

:D I agree with strat58cat the Blues Jr is one nice amp. I have changed the speaker (Eminence Texas Heat) and went with a complete retube (JJ"S) and it went from a great amp to a really great amp. If you are giging out you can always mic it if you need to. I know for just playing at home it has all the volume you need.

The Delux an Jr. are totally Different Amps. But fi youe looking for classic fender tone and output The Delux Is the best choice (6L6 power tubes).
If your leaning towards Vox sound then give the Jr. a try (EL84 power tubes) But the Jr is a noise Box (hiss etc.)

lots of good advice so far. I've got a HRD, but spent about $500 to get it like I wanted it. What you should get depends on what you need. How will you use it?
IF you play in the clubs, the Blues Jr. may or may not be loud enough. With an aftermarket speaker, it may have all the volume AND tone you need.
The HRD is plenty loud, but I hated the tone, so I modded the hell out of it. I could have bought a Mesa Boogie with the money I spent.
The Deluxe Might be the Ace in the hole. Great tone, plenty of volume for a club gig.
Let us know what you get and how it turns out.
