Does the new VM have more clean headroom than the Hot Rod Deluxe or is it the same ? Is the VM just as loud ?

I think the headroom might be similar, but the volume is much easier to control on the VM. If you are wanting to play your next amp at home as a practice amp/at bedroom volumes, you should probably go for the VM. Just my two cents.

I find it intriguing that so many people seem to consider the HRDX volume pot difficult to control. Granted, the amp does get loud very quickly and, past a certain point, will not get much louder, but one has to consider that the HRDX was never really intended for bedroom playing. Thus, the volume pot's "disadvantage" may not be all bad. What it does give, I find, is a good number of tonal variations at roughly equal volume. You can get cleans loud enough to do just about any room, and you can crank it way up for breakup that isn't a whole lot louder. Makes onstage adjustment relatively simple -- you won't blow anyone's head off past a certain point.

You loose a lot of control with the linear taper pot on the HRDlx. Humans don't hear in a linear fashion. It's unnatural. It's nothing more than a marketing ploy to make you think the amp is a lot louder than it really is. There is no advantage to it. The DRRI, Twin, Bassman etc. don't use them. They are professional quality amps. As a matter of fact, the HRDlx was the only amp I've ever owned in 40 years that had one. That's one of the many reasons I went and bought an Egnater and dumped the HRDlx. The people I play with love it too.

I'm with 63Supro on this. I always thought that pot was a dodge, because the HRDlx is marketed to guys who want the highest number of "watts" for the money. You plug in at GC, you start turning it up, and around "3" you're thinking, good god, this thing must really roar turned up to 10! What a lot of watts for my money! ANd it looks like a real amp, too! I'll take it!

Yep. It's got nothing past 4 on the dial. That HRDlx amp was the worst decision I ever made. The vintage molested hybrid series don't do it for me either. Wish I would have kept my 73 Bandmaster.

I love the champ XD series, but the Deluxe VM is less than good.

In fairness, you guys do have a point. It amounts to little more than a plot to sell amplifiers based on pure volume. On the other hand, I understood that when I bought mine -- and, more importantly, bought mine because of the unbelievable deal I got and the great sound. And I don't find that the volume pot is unusable. I didn't buy this amp as a bedroom practice amp, and I don't intend on using it in that capacity. I bought this amp to play gigs with, to play at times when a lot of volume is necessary. And for that, it works great.

Playing gigs was the downfall of my HRDlx. It only lasted 3 months before it had to hit the closet. It's just not a professional quality amp built for gigging.

Looks like that amp volume dial should read 1-2-3-10.

That's right, besides 12 is louder than 10. So was 11.
