Ok what would be the best way to plug my frontman 212r to a mackie 1604 mixer? We dont have any xlr inputs available only 1/4 inch inputs. Do I need to use a direct box?

Have you considered an H&K Red Box?

Theoretically the amp should plug into the mixer just fine if you take a standard instrument cable from your Pre Out jack and run it to the 1/4" input on the mixer. That said, you lose a significant amount of your natural tone that way. Much of the sound from any guitar amp comes from the speakers in tandem with the pre and power amps. Bypassing both the power amp and speakers will provide a completely different tone. However, you will be able to use that signal for reinforcement or recording.

How about just putting a mic in front of it .Maybe something like a Shure sm57.

Agreed. The stock speakers on this amp are a touch on the bright side, so a 57 works well. Put it just off center and you can get a great sound.

So, if the speakers are bright, then you should mic it with a mic with no low end and a huge high-mids spike at 6K?

I dunno. I'd probably try something with a bit of a low-mid hump, like an Audix i5.

Haha. I was more talking about taming the brightness, but that would work if you wanted to capture it. :-)

Perhaps you misunderstood....

An SM57 exhibits a huge bump through 6-10K, which is what guitar players call "bright." It is a "bright" sounding microphone, with no lows to speak of. It will not mitigate highs: it will accentuate them.

The Audix has a much less pronounced high-mids bump, and a pronounced bump in the low mids, around 300hz, whihc would help tame the speaker's natural brightness. In some applications it will sound muddy, but works well calming a shrill source.

I agree with Slap Chop. I use an i5 for my home recordings instead of my 57. Sometimes I use both. But if I had to choose one, it would be my i5. You'll pick up a much better sound with it in my opinion as well.
