I had a tweed Blues Junior and I did most of the BillM mods. They made the amp sound better.

One of the best mods is the adjustable bias pot. I burned up a set of output tubes pretty fast before I did the mod - it wasn't long after the paint turned brown that the tube crapped out. If you want to run your tubes hot, you can, but if you want to run them at a more normal bias, you can do that too.

I ended up recently selling it and I ordered an Egnater Rebel 20 - it's on the way. That may be the same head that Supro has.

The blues junior really is a nice amp - the mods helped. Less hum, better sound, less boxy.

I think you'll like it. Did you order the 1x12 cab too?

Good choice! I have one, too. Destroys all monsters. Best of all, you won't end up sounding like everybody else. :)

That is, until everybody finally figures it out and buys one. :D

I have a homemade pine deluxe size cabinet that I thought I'd make for a deluxe kit, but I'm going to put an Eminence Legend 125 in it and make it into a speaker cab.

You can do a lot better than a 125 Legend.

Yeah - you're right. Right now I'm just trying to do something inexpensive for the speaker until I get some more cash and make up my mind what to do. How's the 1x12 cabinet?

Absolutely awesome. It seems tuned to the amp. It's Birch, ported and closed backed too. It's a Custom Voiced Celestion Elite-80 Speaker. It's really sweet. Really projects.

I've heard several BJs with various 'bill m' mods completed, but the biggest leap forward is in the simple upgrading of the driver. Do that and you may not need anything else....

First of all, why should you have to replace the speaker on a new amp as soon as you get it home?

Second, egged on by members of various online forums, notably the "Blues Junior Mafia" at the FDP, I did replace the driver in my Blues Junior. It still sucked.

That amp has no touch sensitivity... it's just a "guitar enloudener." Now, if you're standing on the pedal the whole time you play, maybe it works for you... but for me, I was looking for some kind of subtlety, some kind of breath of life, some sort of responsiveness. The speaker didn't fix it, the tubes didn't fix it, the pedals didn't fix it. It just laid there like a lox, and I never got a single decent track recorded with it.

So, if you dig it, fine. But buying a brand new amp that needs a pile of mods sounds kind of silly to me. Even sillier when you try all those mods and it still doesn't cook.

That's part of the reason why I bought my Classic 30. It basically came down to that or the sub-$1000 Fenders (BJ, HRD, etc), and I wanted something that sounded great and didn't need any mods. Having played through that amp for the last year, I'm quite pleased to say I made the right choice!

And on the plus side, I hear that if I ever want to replace the stock Blue Marvel speaker, I'm in for a world of love and unicorns. I think the stock speaker sounds fine, though.

S63Supro, you've just about got me talked into buying one of those cabs. It sounds great through the open back Red Fan cab, but I'd like the flexibility of a punchy closed-back sound, too.

And it's still 12-months-same-as-cash through the end of the month at GC. I think I need an Egnater 1x12 cab and a Line 6 M13. :)

That cabinet seems like a pretty good deal. I'm really thinking about it, too. 20% off at MF until Aug. 31st - mention code "20% ".
:)

Oh I agree entirely. Cant argue with your sentiments.

But the amp sounded great in the shop is all I can say. It wasn't till I got it home and spent some time with it..

I'm just saying that the Speaker upgrade was such a dramatic improvement, that I kept the amp, play it every day and am entirely happy with it.

We'll have to disagree on the playing dynamics - I'm more than happy with what the BJ gives me when I back off or dial the voulme back. I'm not expecting ultimate dynamics handling from a mass produced 15 watt amp that costs what it does.
