I was looking at Guitar Center today and saw that they had a 1966 Super Reverb Vintage Amp. I am considering getting a Super Reverb 1965 Reissue originally. The vintage Amp is 1899 and the Reissue is 1499, I was wondering if the difference is actually worthwhile considering the upkeep and maintenance of an old amp. If someone could list the pros and cons that would be great. Also is 1499 a fair price to pay for the amp or should I try to barter for a lower price? I know Fender has recently raised their prices.

Vintage amps are great , but you have to know what to look for.It is important to know if it is all original. Are the trannies original, how about the speakers, etc.If its in good shape and original , i would pick the vintage over the reissue everytime. It would only increase in value.

Vintage all the way !!!!

Now the real deal is the vintage most likely has the most wiggle room in the price and you should be able to work a sweet deal on the vintage amp.

having said all that the reissues are fantastic amps and well worth consideration.

Vintage stuff just does not present itself to us all that often and so when it does and you can afford it, go for it !!!!!

+1 In most cases the vintage ones sound better to my ears.

I'd say listen to them both. Feel 'em over literally. Run both amps through the paces at several volume levels and see what they sound like. Then choose the one you think is best. I wouldn't buy a vintage amp simply because it's old. I'd buy it because it's good. How fortunate you are to have a choice.

If that's a '66 amp, it's point to point eyelet board construction. Very easy to work on and replace components. Has it had a recap? It'll need it. I'd go vintage all the way! Flash a $G and see if they'll budge a little.

Make absolutely sure that you have the opportunity to play both amps at full volume. That will be the clincher: if it's going to crap out on you, it will do it when you're working it hard. This is general advice for buying any amp, but is particularly applicable here. You should give this article (http://www.gibson.com/en-us/Lifestyle/Features/11-vintage-amp-tips-528/) a read before you do anything. It's on the Gibson website, but it is full of good advice. Also, make sure you inquire about in-store warranty or, to put it bluntly, whether you're stuck with it if it craps out. Buyer beware, but you should do fine!
