I've had my NOS Tweed Blues Jr. for 3 or 4 years now and have decided to put some new tubes in it. I got it from a fellow off ebay so there's no telling how long he had it. It still has the original tubes as far as I can tell but still sounds fine. However I have been told by multiple people that one should replace the tubes in an amp as soon as possible if purchased second hand. I just bought a "Precision Matched" set of Fender EL84s. They were extremely cheap and I just wanted to see if they would make a difference. Now I want to purchase some real qualilty tubes for the preamp section.
The guitar shop in which I purchased the EL84s has no other sets of tubes so I will have to go online or find another store. What tubes (12ax7) should I look for. Do specific sets affect the tone in specific ways. For example would EH tubes add more treble or bass? Is ordering tubes online feasible due to the fragile nature of a vacuum tube? What sites offer the best deals on tubes and what makers generally produce the best, most reliable model? Will replacing the power section with a higher quality tube inprove the amps sound at all?
Understandably what may be the best tube for someone may not be the best for me. I know I am asking alot of questions but the research I've done on this site and others shows little agreement in anything. One source says JJs are great while another says they are unreliable. Almost everything I have found is contradictory. Hopefully somebody who knows about this stuff can point me in the right direction.

Thanks,
Russ

They sell JJ's and they are awesome - both the tubes and the guys at Eurotubes.

And to respond to your concern about JJ's. I did my first retube ever back in January with a set of JJ's. It went fine except for some reason one of the tubes was acting up - crackling and such. I emailed Eurotubes and they had a replacement mailed out to me immediately. I've had zero issues since and I was pleasantly surprised at how much the tone of my Deville improved!

My friend/bandmate just retubed his Garnett head a few months ago with JJ's and he's very pleased with the results.

So even if you have a problem - which is unusual - the guys at Eurotubes stand behind their product.

Email or phone them and they're happy to answer any questions. If you tell them what amp you've got and what sound you're going for they'll even recommend a tube set.

Hello DeadAhead,

I'm not sensitive to any manufacturer.
but many others have their preferances.

I replaced my aX7's with aT7's ,a little cleaner
a little lower volume. not a big deal at all.

You can also put aY7's in there for a smidgen of cleanliness
but a greater loss in volume.

That's what I know.

Cheers.
