I feel its time to replace the tubes on my Tweed BJr w/ Jensen Speaker and my Champion 600. Yesterday I purchased a set of "presicsion matched" (whatever) EL84 Fender Sovtech tubes for $15. I was looking for something a bit more high quality, however, this is all they had at my local music store(I refuse to spend any money at GC after the way I was disrepected there). Do tubes have that much impact on the tone of a tube amp such as a BJr.? If so, what stage, power or preamp? Also, what tubes do you guys recommend if I am looking for some nice bright headroom?
Concerning the Champ 600. I bought it off of Ebay with Electro Harnonix tubes in both postitions. To my sorry ears it sounds like it could use some treble. Any suggestions are very, very welcome, are sugestions for the BJr. Also I would love to know where you purchase the tubes if yo must have them shipped because I'm very weary of shipping these things.

Hello DeadAhead,

I changed the 12ax7's to 12at7's
things got a wee bit cleaner,
but there was a volume loss so in the end
things were about the same.
I got GT brand cause that what was stocked
by my local shop.

Now if I were Eric johnson I'm sure there would have
a whole lot more to report.

Cheers.

I would personally try to use the preamp tubes to tailor your sound. I experimented a lot with my old Mesa DR, and found that it's much more trsnsparent to tube changes than my Fender HRDV. I found that a good set of NOS Sylvania short-plate 12ax7 tubes sound really great in my Fender. If I want a little more treble, I'll put a Matsushita 12ax7 in V-3 to brightten things up.

I think once you find a good combo of NOS tubes for your amp, it almost doesn't matter what brand of power tube you go with as long as they work and your amp is properly biased. I'm personally runnung Sovtek in my power section right now, and they're good enough for me.

My friend and I just recently picked up a Champion 600 each and they both had Electro-Harmonix tubes inside. Whats up with that?
I thought Fender had EVERYTHING come with Groove Tubes.

To make matters stranger I went to change the Chinese 12ax7 for a Groove Tube one that came with my DeVille and it was too fat for the metal tube sleeve, it simply didnt fit so I put a Mesa one in and that was fine.

Is it cos these amps are made in China?

Whats the deal with that?

Its funny you mention that Celtic Cyclonus. I bought by Champ 600 off Ebay and the seller mentioned he'd installed EH tubes for a better sound. Wonder what thats about? Sounds fishy to me.

Yeah, I think so too.

Anyone else out there got a Champ with EH Tubes in it?

Let us know!
