I picked up a hot rod deville (US made in 98) at a really good price because it has an issue and I'm hoping it's not too serious.

When the amp is first turned on it makes a crackeling noise (pretty loud) until it warms up and then it stops. Doesn't make the noise when power is on, but in the standby mode. The level of the crackle is not effected by volume, drive, etc. and it's the same for both channels.

Have any ideas for some quick checks I could make before taking it in for a repair?

Thanks.

Jack,
Go here studentweb.eku.edu/justin_holton/
Check the obvious first, your cord, lightly tap the tubes with a pencil to see if any are microphonic etc. Loose connections.
There's all kinds of useful information for repairing and modding the Hot Rod series. It could be bad solder joints on the tube sockets. It's pretty common. Usually the power tubes.

There is a very common problem that has symptoms like your amp is having.

I had a 1993 Blues Deville with the same.

There is a handfull of small 1/2 watt resisters on the board that get overheated, replace them with 1 watt resistors and problem solved.

Not for someone without experience inside a tube amp !!!

Inexpensive fix other than bench time for your tech.

Kinda makes you wonder why Fender didn't put in the 1 watt resistors. That would be an even easier fix.

Yep. If you do the repair yourself, be careful not to lift the traces off the board with excessive heat.

No the resistors are in spec, they just don't last forever.

The one watt resistors would not have cost them any more it was just what the designers called for, nothing more.

Mine was a 1993 and lasted untill 2007, 14 years of constant use and abuse.

I have a 1995 HR Deville right now that is perfectly stock, and going strong.

Good quality resistors usually last way longer than that unless they are subjected to hostile conditions like high heat, extreme cold, serious vibration. Toy generally won't have these conditions in a well designed tube amp. The resistors in my Twin and Champ are over 35 years old and never had a problem I have an old radio from the 40's and they're still good..
