This is depressing. I bought my Hot Rod Deluxe thinking I was getting a quality product - and I love mine and have had no problems. But, this forum is full of people bad-mouthing the HR and saying what a POS it is. Are these famous for being cursed?

Well, not cursed. But not designed for longevity, either.

You wanna get really wiped out? CHeck out www.thefenderforum.com and search on "hrd" or "hot rod" to see what some real amp experts have said about it.

Take a look at www.thefenderforum.com as well as other non-Fender affiliated forums. Some people have absolutely no problems what so ever. Some like myself have many, many problems and have since the first couple months of ownership. I know a lot of people who had the same difficulties. A site is dedicated to repairing them.

The thing is, if you have no problems, just enjoy the amp. They sound fine. It has a five year warranty. Mine will be up in a year and a half. I want to use the balance of the warranty as a selling point. I was trying to rely on it for gigging, but it just won't work out. It's just too temperamental.

Some people get really defensive about their equipment, I don't. It's just a tool to get a job done. It's time for me to move on. Egnater seems the way to go.

I call my amp a POS all the time. I didn't say yours was. You may have a gem. Only time will tell.
Best of luck with the amp.

Well , yes .They are for sure the redheaded stepchild of Fenders for sure. Its hard to tell if the disgruntled represent the majority or just the more vocal ones.I do know the majority of people who have problems with them gig alot.I would say that its probably not the most durable under those situations.I have had 2 blues jrs, 1 hotrod deluxe and now a blues deluxe.I gig maybe once a month now and play everyday at home for a couple of hours.I have only had a problem with my first blues jr.It had a bad solder joint.I also have a bassman ri and a 75 super reverb. My BM is primarilly what i use to gig with (but sometimes my bdx or bjr). The bm is considered to be more reliable and after taking it apart i can see why.Its built much better internally.I would certainly be aware of the issues of the hr series, but depending on your situation, it might be ok .I am sure if my amp crapped out while i was playing i would be pretty upset too.

You shouldn't have to worry about your amp when you're gigging and that's what I do. I obsess over it and it can effect my performance. Every time I hear a slight noise or pop and I start to lose it. I feel like I'm sitting on a time bomb. I'm a seasoned player and I'm not used to worrying about my equipment failing.

What's even more depressing is having you amp fail on stage not once, but on three different occasions from different defects.

I had a HRD for a few years, and never had any problems (although it wasn't moved around too much). I normally tied off my guitar cable to the handle to keep from putting stress on the plastic input jack. After joining another band, the HRD was too loud so I got a Blues Junior. I had that for a few years and it was fine with no problems, even though I wasn't completely happy with the stock speaker in either amp. Like 63 supro said, reliability depends on the individual amp. That's really a shame, because I feel that for several hundred dollars you shouldn't have to worry about your amp not working properly!

BTW, I just bought a new Blues Junior right before the big price increase, and this one has crappy tube sockets. I bought this amp because of the size and price. I'm mainly playing at low volume, so I don't need anything with more power. I actually preferred the BJr's tone (and a Blues Deluxe)over a DRRI and a PRRI at low volume.

If I ever join another band that plays out, I'd buy a higher quality amp than a Hot Rod. But for just playing at home and the occasional jam session the Hot rod amps are fine.

Is it the same for Hot Rod DeVilles? I've had mine for a while now, and I haven't had any problems with it at all.

Yep. The circuit and boards are pretty much the same. They just do something with the trannies. It's got 20 watts more power and many of the same issues. Same thing, some are great some are dogs. There isn't a lot of consistency in production. Cheap parts, cheap boards, lousy tubes and marginal speakers. I guess I got what I paid for. :?

I paid $300 for mine used. But seriously, it hasn't given me any problems at all.

Excuse me while I knock on some wood.

They do have there problems but are easy to fix usually. I think they are damn good sounding amps with a more Gilmore sounding Pink Floyd thing happening.

Gee, I suppose so... if you're running a hundred or so effects pedals ahead of the amp, that is.

How can anybody claim that any given amp or guitar produces a "Gilmour" sound when his tone is the result of an effects chain that might have been wired at NASA?

Hey SlapChop, I'm hopefully taking my HRDlx to GC to see what kind of deal I can get on the Egnater Rebel. They sent me a 15% off coupon on anything I buy with my trade. It'll bring the Egnater down to about $725. We'll see. If the deals bad I'll try to Craig List it locally. I just hate selling it to an individual I can see. I don't want any bad Karma.

Sounds like a plan, '63. Congrats! You already know you're gonna love it... here's hoping there isn't some dreaded gremlin waiting inside the Rebel!
