I just saw that some web sites are reporting the Super Champ XD is in Stock now. Don't tell anyone until after you purchase yours.

I went over to my local GC, and they haven't heard anything about this new superchamp xd. I'm interested in trying it out. I have the original 1982 fender superchamp. I wonder how this new would compare.

Anyone know where the Superchamp XD is made???

China. Of the first 4 I've seen reviewed, one has just developed a terminal "whining" problem and had to get sent back, and another showed up damaged in the box (not necessarily an OEM problem, possibly just a shipping problem). We saw a ton of problems in the first run of the also-Chinese made GDEC-30. Any Chinese-made product should be suspect as their initial incidence of repair rate is relatively high. But that's why it's $299 and not $599.

uhh...actually the G-DEC 30 is made in Indonesia, not China, but I see where you are going. We're watching the quality closely, don't worry.

Perhaps I have a tin ear. I like metal sounding things... er go my fr50ce. My fingers are too fat to dance down the frets.. hense... a stainless steel slide. (metal, hah... okay some pyrex bottles) now my super champ xd is halfway to minnesota via UPS don't tell me bad things. I may be arthritic... but I can have nice new Fender stuff. Too bad they don't make fancy harmonica's... or ... do ... they ??? I'll be back... I am going to check out the products and tshirts....

have a great day people of the world.

Well we're all very hopeful that the SC sounds as good as the early reviewers say, and that the QC will be excellent. I'm not worried about it.

We have a kind of perfect storm of cool, small, cheap gigable tube amps coming out right now. Until I get a chance to personally A/B/C the SC vs. the Windsor Studio vs. the Kustom Defender, I gotta stay on the fence. The Windsor's 12" with the power soak and speaker-compensated lo-impedance line out (all HUGE for home studio recording and PA-augmented stage work which I do a lot of) and Class A is a powerful draw, but Peaveys in general have never done much for me tone-wise.

The magic has to happen with my ax through my fingers into one of those amps. And GC has been waaaay slow to get SCs in stock. And the other two haven't been released yet, though the Windsor is imminent.

If I was Fender and wanted to sell amps, I'd assign a guy to run around and make sure every GC in America had one demo VC/SC to play. But those of us who frequent GC post-sale have noticed a big decline in quality and customer service. It's more like Wal-Mart now.

Note to consumers: whenever possible, patronize your local mom & pop Fender-authorized music store. The days when they'd charge you MSRP are long gone--they all have to match net prices now. Sometimes even beat em if they have a lo-overhead.

Tone ps: The SC is noteable for its classic and distinctive Fender Blackface glassy sparkle made famous by Twins and Deluxe Reverbs. This sounds fantastic with a Strat single-coil or in quacker mid-position. This alone may put it over the top, but the sound of 6V6 overdrive is a heavenly gift as well.

I just received the SCXG. (15 degrees F) outside, so... I am letting it warm up inside until I get home from work. Then I will clear the house and run'er through the course. And until my local pro gives me the inside scoop, then I'll report back... It sure is pretty tho.

Smart move. Never fire up a tube amp after just taking it in from the cold. You might blow the tubes. Let it acclimate a bit.

Hello, I'm new to this forum. I'm a more or less professional drummer, and I
play some guitar and bass, mostly to have a hobby, and to use in my home studio and with my students.

Last week I bought the Super-Champ XD, to use at home for the most. Holy C**p, what an amp!! I'm selling my Squier strat, so I figured out that I should use that money to get me an amp. So I went to the music store to buy a Epiphone Valve special, they had a special offer on that. I tried it, and while it sounded ok, it was kinda a one trick pony, and also lacked some bottom. So I decided to try some of the other amps available, and first tried the Vibro-Champ, and it owned the Epi in a big way, especially on the clean side. Next to it was the Super-champ, so I tried it and I was hooked! At almost twice the price of the epi, it was a bit expensive for me (in Norway most stuff is expensive), but I just had to have it. (Guess that is what mastercards are for)

So heres a short review. Keep in mind that I'm a drummer, and havent played that many amps.

First, the "clean" channel, with my Epi SG G400. This is really like on the other fender amps I have played. Much better than the clean on the epi. I would describe it as a full sound. When turned up, it creates a nice overdriven sound, perhaps from the tubes rather than the simulated preamp?? I also played some pink floyd with my soon to be sold squier strat, and i sounded wonderful, almost so wonderful that I not wanted to sell it. (but it went more or less out of tune in 5 min, so I'll guess I'll sell it anyway)

The other channel features 16 different simulations ( as you probably know), from vintage tweed champ amp, to metal and jazz. I played astronomy domine with my students today, and I really liked the overdriven tweed sim, really nice fuzzy sound for that 60s version of that song. Some of my students are into metal, so I played a little Pantera, using the metal sims. A lot of bottom(surpisingly much for the 10" speaker) as well as a LOT of gain, worked perfectly. I also used the overdriven britisch stack selection, and it worked as well.

I tried to play some blues, with one of the blackface sims and some tremolo, I got into that blues mood instantly.

Speaking of the tremolo, the effects sound ok, I mostly use tremolo, spring reverb and the vibratones. To my drummer-ears, they sound good, especially the vibratone. The other effects sound ok as well, but as they are not very adjustable, one might want to use some external boxes. For instance, the delay are set with three different tempos, the only thing thats adjustable is how much you use.

I'm sure a guitarist could describe this better than me, but this is my take on the superchamp. Please ask if you have questions.
I have played it all the time after I got it, playing much more guitar than I usually do. A lot of fun in a small box!

Finally, manual states the the amp is a 20 watt, while on the box (and every place on the web)it says its 15w. Maybe someone from Fender could clarify this??

Gretsch Drummer,
Wow, nice review. It's great to hear that we have another satisfied customer.

The Super-Champ XD is supposed to produce 15 Watts, and later revisions of the manual will be corrected.

Thanks,
Shane

? for Bill M or whoever: are the hybrid watts of the SC different from the all-tube watts of the BJ? In the same way that SS watts are less than half of the true db output of a tube amp (because of the ability of tubes to handle huge transients). Does the SS preamp stage of the SC render it noticeably less loud than the BJ even though they are rated exactly the same output in watts? And does bias and plate voltage enter into the equation? In other words, is Fender hitting the 2 EL84s in the BJ harder than the 2 6V6s in the SC?

(shines Bill M Signal into the Gotham skies--yes, it's the silhouette of a tone monster)
