The one that really cries out for direct-record USB is the Vibro Champ being basically a little studio class-A wonder. But you wouldn't get the benefit of the 6V6s so it would be just the DSP/modeling stage, which would be useful to be sure, but not the Great Sound.

Yeah, has he ever showed up over here? He still can't tell what use Fender is making of the 12AX7s in the SC and VC--whether phase inverter or gain stage.

Of course, Fender could just TELL us! (hint hint...)

I got my VCXD last week. I see MF shows the SCXD to be in stock now, too. Anyone get theirs yet?

Here is what I posted at another Fender Forum:

Unfortunately, I had to go to two different music stores in my town to play both. I would have preferred playing both side by side... thus it is harder for me to compare with the time and distance gap....But having said that.....

I liked them both. But still undecided which way to go. I currently own a Vox AD30VT, and I was hoping both the Fenders would blow it out of the water, but they are really enough different to warrant keeping the Vox and adding one of the Fender XDs to the family.(Something my wife does not understand).

The cleans - blackface and tweed, were very nice, and had a great tuby feel. Using reverb on one of the tweed settings (not sure which one, as they only have numbers) but it sounded nice and creamie - like my old blues deluxe. I was also impressed with the last setting, an acoustic setting I think.

The more overdrive settings I did not really get a feel for, as I tend to be a bit intimidated in public blasting away at overdrive (I really should take it home for a 30 day trial). But at the lower settings, I was not very impressed. But I would want to try it out at home before I gave a more authoritative impression on the OD settings. But to date, the Vox was better in OD, IMO.

The volume differences on the various settings was disappointing - far too much variation in the settings.

The little VCXD has that little 8in speaker. And at the shop, it was sounding ok. But at home I use the "line out" of my Vox and run it into my Bassman, using the Vox sort of like a head. So I asked the salesman if I could do that with the Fender there in the store, he had never heard of doing that, but he got me a chord and we plugged it in. WOW - took it to a "hoe nutha lefal" - The salesman was even impressed. Those 4x10 with the bass response took that little VCXD to tone heaven - offering quite a nice pallet of clean tones for the Bassman. (SIDE NOTE - I would be interested if any of you with larger nice amps have done this with the XDs). One other plus for the Fender, when you use the "line out", it does not disengage the speaker in the combo amp like it does on the Vox.

I think the effects on the Vox are generally better and more tweakable. But the cleans on the Fenders are better.

So, bottom line, I resisted (to which my wife is grateful) and will wait till Christmas money comes in, and I will continue to weigh it out till I decide if I want to go with the VC or the SC. The two channels of the SC was not a plus for me, though it may be for others. I will continue to check out this thread to see what others say.

Great report, thanks! That Vox with the 12AX7 is a good amp, this is a great battle of the hybrids. Volume-wise, I'd assume the 30-watt SS Vox is about equal to the 15-watts of the tube-output stage SC. Maybe a bit less.

Both the Vox AD30Vt and the SCXD are plenty loud, if not too loud for home use, and work great for small gigs. And can either be miced or lined out. Because I have the Vox, I am leaning toward the smaller VC (5 watts) for home. And the VC was quite loud in the guitar store. But I am still not clear on all the distinctions between the VC and SS. So I am continuing to read up. As for battle between the hybrids, as I mentioned, both the Vox and Fender have pluses and minues... so, if you can afford it, have both. My Bassman is my GREAT amp, but the Vox, and possibly one of the Fender XDs are great grab and go and home amps with acceptable tone and versatility. And "line out" into the Bassman only makes it better.

Hmmm. I'll have to try hooking up my VCXD to a larger amp to see how it sounds. Still haven't tried it for recording. That's this weekend's project.
