Thank you VERY much. I sent you an email. If I was you, I would edit your message and remove your email address. The reason why, is because people who will send you emails about viagra pills and fake watches by the hundreds have scripts that scour the internet looking for "@" signs, saving the addresses and putting them into huge email lists they sell.

Sorry to hijack your thread but I've got a repair question about the same amp (Fender Eighty Five). I think the jack for channel one needs replacing. Give it a wiggle and the sound cuts in and out. I'm not bad with a soldering iron but I'm a little concerned about safely opening it up. What do I need to watch out for (I've never worked on an amp before). Is the jack relatively easy to replace? Where can get a new part?

Thanks!

Trav

More than likely, your jack is fine.

When you take it apart, take a look at the connections on the PCB.

Are the smooth and uniform, or does it look like there's a line (Separation) between the protruding pins and the rest of the solder?

I had the same problem, and all I had to do was use a little flux and re-melt each connection.

When you take it apart, there are two large round black cans, these are capacitors, on the right hand side, as you are looking at it from the front.

These may contain enough juice to shock you, but mine were harmless.

If you do have to replace the jack, use either a solder sucker or desoldering braid (I recommend the sucker).

Make sure that when you remove the jack, that all of the holes in the PCB are open, so that the new one just slips right in.

Be careful pulling the knobs off, use even force on two sides.

Thanks for the quick reply! In case it is the jack I'd like to have one on hand so I only have to open her up once. Know where I can get one? Is this it: http://www.darrenriley.com/shop/cart.ph ... tail&p=426 ?

If so, does that seem like a reasonable deal?

Thanks again!

Believe it or not, this is the jack you need:

http://www.darrenriley.com/shop/cart.ph ... tail&p=427

It doesn't make sense, but that is the jack. I think the reason is, is that it is going to get used a lot, and each connection is a physical anchor, to help keep it anchored.

The price could be better, but it's not terrible. I hear you about keeping it so you only have to open it once. It is a bit of work to get it open.

You are welcome. If you need any help, don't hesitate to ask. Do you have desoldering wick, or a solder sucker?

I found that a bulb type solder sucker worked a lot better than solder wick. You do have to be very careful not to overheat the pc board.

Also another source for Fender and other make amp and guitar parts is Antique Electronics Supply at http://www.tubesandmore.com/. The prices are a little lower also and sometimes they offer generic parts as well as the manufacturer version.

You know, I was wondering about that myself. I don't see an inbox, or signature section, or anything else in my profile.

THANK YOU! I received the knob yesterday.
