I just changed my speaker in my mesa stilletto and was playing it just getting the tubes heated up and noticed a flash of tube light and then boom ,nothing . I noticed that I left slack in the speaker cable and it was stuck to the side of the tube ( I am an idiot ). There doesn't seem to be any copper wire showing but I can see the white inner most jacket on the cable and I guess this made contact ( I don't know ). ARRRRRRRRR I am so pissed at myself . The fuse looks blown and hopefully that is the only problem ( some reASSurance please). My power tubes were fairly expensive as they were nos tubes . You don't think I could have done more harm than that do you ? I mean WTF.

What's the ohmage of the new speaker? How about the old speaker? If you went from 16 ohms to 8 ohms, its possible that you stressed the amp, but I doubt that would cause damage.

However, if you melted the insulation inside the speaker cable so that the 2 wires came into contact with each other, then you created a short ( that's 0 ohms) and you likely blew up something--hopefully, just the fuse.

I recommend a new speaker cable.

You can test your speaker and cable combination for a short.
Unplug the amp from the wall (duh :P )
Disconnect the speaker cable from the amp, but leave the cable connected to the speaker.
Take an ohm-meter and set it to "ohms".
The speaker cable has two contacts on each end (on a 1/4" jack, the two contacts are separated by that little black ring).
Touch the 2 ohm-meter probes to the 2 cable contacts that were connected to the amp.

Hopefully, read the ohm-meter and see something between "4" and "20".
If you see 0 you have a short; if you see no difference from when you disconnect the probes and connect the probes then you have no circuit. Of course, if you don't place the probes in the correct spots then you will also get a bad reading. So get help from an electrician if you're unsure.

Thanks for the info . I got some new fuses today and I am going to put them in a little while and see what happens ,of course only after I make up a new speaker wire . I have a speaker cable around here somewhere so I guess I can make one out of that . Speaker cable is speaker cable right. I mean it shouldn't make a difference what cable I use should it? I will just have to cut into it for the solder end and then I can see what happens . Thanks for the reply and if anything I said is wrong please correct me. Oh yeah the box said 8 ohm and this is the correct rating but I did buy it from guitar center so there is a chance the speaker itself is actually something else.

You could always drop a multimeter across the speaker leads and check the R.

I took every thing apart again to look at the speaker to see it's ohm rating but there is nothing at all on the speaker to verify it is an 8 ohm speaker. I soldered it up again using the same speaker cable , and put a new fuse in there and played for about 2 hours and everything seems fine . Can a fuse blow if it is old or for no reason at all . Bad thing is I don' know if I like the new speaker . It tamed the harshness at higher volumes but it also took some balls away from the amp . Maybe it just needs some time to break in .

Hi Wash, did you use the same speaker cable with the burned insulation? Hope not. Even if you can't see the copper conductor it's not suitable for reliable service. The fuse protects the amp and sounds like you dodged the bullet this time! Mesa Boogies are built like tanks, but route a new cable for that speaker. Speakers do take some time to break in. I've found that 20 hours at various amp volumes works best. Have a Weber 10 in a custom Bassman 2X10 combo that went from strong clean to a full authorative sound after 25 hours at practice levels. It was a serious change, I thought someone had messed with the amp. Art
