As many here have told you, an Ibanez TS9 is a "desert island" acquisition.

Another pedal that merits serious consideration is the MXR Phase 90.

There's a great debate whether to get the "script" logo or the "block" logo or the EVH model (with a script or block logo mode button), and the "to R86 mod or not to R86 mod" debate continues to rage on.

I personally have a late 70s early-block-logo model that I wouldn't trade for anything (within reason :P ). I bought it at a pawn shop around 1996, and it's the best phase shifter pedal I've ever owned or heard (and I've owned and heard almost everything!)...

I've played through all the different versions of the Phase 90, and while there are slight differences, all of them are pretty dang close...it just goes back to personal taste.

To me, a phase shifter is as vital as any other pedal. I don't use it on even 20% of my songs, but it's a great way to punch up the middle of a set or to add some dynamics to a song that's just not "hitting it".

Although I have many more pedals than than just a TS9 and a Phase 90, those two are absolutely vital, especially since my amp (a '63 Reissue Vibroverb) has tremolo.

IMHO you can't go wrong with the good 'ol Boss DS-1. They're cheap and make great hammers when your case won't open.
