I'm noticing that my BJ NOS is lacking in the bass department. I especially notice the flubbing while playing it overdriven (at low and high volumes). And it's very pronounced while playing any barred blues shuffle on the lower end (in F, G, A, etc.).

I'll admit, I'm a novice with tube amps. Could this have anything to do with the power tubes (EL84s)? I just recently bought it used and I know that replacing the tubes in a used tube amp is almost a must. I already replaced the 3 12ax7s.

I'm curious because this particular amp is raved about (myself being one of the ravers...), but I haven't heard any mention of bass issues.

Thanks in advance.

That happens to my Bjr and in my case it's bad contact between the pins and the sockets of the power tubes. Wiggle the power tubes a little while it's flubbing and see if it cuts in and out. If it cuts in and out, then the contact between the tubes and the socket might not be that great. Use some contact cleaner and see if it helps. If that doesn't help then you can try bending the pins on the power tubes very slightly by rolling the pins between your thumb and forefinger. If that doesn't solve it, you may need to retension the sockets. Needless to say, you need to take the appropriate safety precautions to keep from getting shocked.

Good luck.

I believe all Blues Juniors do that to some degree. Part of it is the speaker, the small cabinet and also the amp design. I put a better speaker in my BJ and it helped some. It still has a flubby sounding low end when the gain is maxed. I think there are some mods to fix that, if you want to spend the money, just search for Billm mods.
