I got a Blues Junior from MF today (tried to get one at GC but they were sold out everywhere!). I'm new to tube amps so here goes -- is there anything I should check since I received it via UPS -- loose tubes, etc)? Is there anything I should do to "break" it in? Anything else I should know? It's the NOS tweed with the Jensen speaker and it looks and sounds sweet! Thanks for your advice.

Be sure the tubes are seated all the way. Other than that just play it. The speaker will eventually break in on its own as you play it.

Hello Zelda17,

Firstly welcome to this forum.

Congrats on your new amp.
Blues Jr.'s are a great amp for many
including myself. Never had a problem with mine
Hope you have just as much fun with yours.

I see you have a Jensen speaker, so no need to replace the awful 'Emminence made for Fender' driver that comes with new standard BJs.

If you want to break the speaker in quickly, take the amp to a rehearsal room or somewhere well away from the rest of humanity, turn it up loud but still clean, and blast the bejesus out of it for about 30mins. Wear headphones.. Job done..

I don't recommend you turn it up loud and blast it for the speaker break in period.

Run your stereo through it on a medium volume (about 3 or 4) for about 24 hours.

I wouldn't recommend that at all. I'd go with Chet's suggestion first or just play it reasonable volumes for a little while.

For breaking in a Blues Junior, I think a sixteen-pound hammer is plenty. Just take your time and don't swing so hard... let the hammer do the work.

Hi All,

On the subject of Speaker Break-In;

Here's a copy and paste from the Celestion site - which seems to go along with high volume. (I used the method with the Celestion G12T-100 speakers in my CT SE, and it worked fine)

Quote:
How do I break in my speakers?

Important Note! Before breaking it in it's advisable to "warm up" the speaker gently for a few minutes with low-level playing or background hum.

Break in a speaker with a fat, clean tone: turn up the power amp volume to full, and control the level with the preamp gain. Use a level that will be quite loud, but not painful in a normal size room.

Have the bass and mid up full, and the treble at least half. On your guitar, use the middle pick up position (if your guitar has more than one pick up) and play for 10-15 minutes using lots of open chords, and chunky percussive playing. This will get the cone moving, and should excite all the cone modes and get everything to settle in nicely. The speaker will continue to mature over the years, but this will get it 95% of the way to tonal perfection in the shortest time.

Link to site;

Click on "Breaking-in Speakers" in upper drop down menu

I could not find any break-in info at the Jensen Speaker site. Here's a link to the Jensen site, if you want to check it out.

Jensen Speakers

Please note that the break-in procedure above is from the Celestion site - not Jensens' site.

IMO - Just play and enjoy your guitar and amp of choice - and it will break in nicely - given enough time. With the 15 watt BJ, it shouldn't take all that long to break-in. (However - at the low volume I use - it would take years for those 100 watt speakers in my CT SE to "loosen up" :lol: )

As for the sound of the "Made for Fender" speakers Fender has used;
A lot of good music has been made over the years with those stock speakers. :D

A person may not like the sound - but, IMHO, that boils down to personal preference.

Fair comment in the previous post about the stock speakers, but who knows what was in the BJs during some classic recordings?

All I know, is that the stock speaker was very harsh at anything above a whisper and hardly responded to EQ adjustment. After changing mine, the harshness went away and the amp's EQ controls actually worked properly. In a word - clarity.. Anyone else have a comment on the stock Emminence speaker?

As the Celestion V30 has 60+ watt handling capacity, I wasn't too worried about giving it a good workout!

If it's not too late, handle the tubes with clean "white gloves" or a clean cotton t shirt or the like.

I've never done that and never had a tube fail because of a fingerprint in 40+ years. They get dirty dusty and funky on their own. It's not a halogen bulb. The envelope is actually pretty thick. If using white gloves make you feel better though, that's cool. I've never bothered or even heard of doing it.
