Thanks again to everyone for all the help. I figured out my problem. I did, indeed, torch my circuit board. I found this out after i went out and bought some proper solder wick and redid my former horrendous solder job. got it all cleaned up and plugged in the amp...still humming. no sound. I got out my old circuit tester and started checking continuity on my board. Turns out there were two posts on the ic that weren't talking together. I burned the board between them. So i unbraided the solder wick and took a few individual strands of copper and twisted them into a jumper wire. I soldered it to both of the posts, checked for continutiy, and plugged in the amp....

Works like a charm!

Hey Paristotle, I got this far with my 15R but no cigar. I don't have a tester on hand either to check the chip but I'm pretty sure I torched the board too. There is a very prominent spot next to one of the back pins that looks like it burnt off.. Any tips on how I should check this ? I'll get a tester but I've no idea what to do with it..

Hi fuse,

You will check the circuit board traces for continuity from each IC pin to the components that the traces connect. It's like checking a fuse, continuity. You have to be sure that the amp is unplugged from electricity and that the capacitors are discharged before checking continuity. Check that there is no DC voltage on the places that you are going to check for continuity, by measuring each point with the positive meter lead, and the negative meter lead connected to the chassis. Then, when checking the traces for continuity, all traces should measure very close to zero ohms, and if you get a higher reading or no reading, the trace is open and should be bridged with a small wire, a piece of component lead, or a piece of solder wick.

Well, his last post said he fixed his problem, so I assume life has been wonderful since 2009.

Thanks a lot guys. That was very helpful. I checked the continuity and things look... ok - I had to bridge a couple of spots but all I'm getting is a hum when I plug it in. I reversed the speaker wires to see if that was the problem because I forget which one was which... my marker fell off... : ) (I'm assuming: solid red +, stripped -) Anyway, this is slightly better than nothing, the fuse doesn't blow and I've started getting some sort of signs of life from this box... I'll play around some more and see what happens.

The thing with continuity is this: I keep the meter at the 1x setting and it reads 1 on the resistance ... before bridging one of the spots I thought I had fried while soldering, the needle was jumping all the way over to 0 for all the nodes on the tracers ... so perhaps I need to go back.

I'll report back.

I don't want to sound harsh, but your "playing around" is probably making things worse. It doesn't matter which way the speaker connects as far as sound out. The speaker connections only need to be correct so that they are in phase with other speakers, and typically the red or white wire is positive while black is negative.

I'm not sure what the heck you are talking about with your meter readings, because "all the way over to zero" means good continuity. It sounds like you really need some help, before you really screw up your amp. I am not convinced that you know what I was talking about when checking the traces for continuity. Am I wrong?

Sounds like another case for a "dumpster repair". These amps are really not worth the time and effort needed to troubleshoot and repair them. A new, better amp can be purchased for about the same or a little more money. My suggestion:

Yes, close to zero is good... and they all read that. I still only get a loud hum and no sound.

I didn't expect this amp to work, I've had it lying around for a while for one of those days I wanted a project and it's been fun so far. The IC was probably shot- because since putting in the new one there haven't been any blown fuses but maybe there's another thing wrong with it ?

Thanks for the help though guys.
