Hi

My BDRI is too loud.

Are there alternate tubes that I can use to reduce the output without losing the sound?

I saw a THD hotplate that looked like it would let me turn the amp up while turning the output down, but it costs over $300. Are there cheaper devices like this?

You could try a 12au7 in the V1 preamp position. I had to do that with my HRDx and I also use a 12AT7 in the PI . I like what it did for mine.

Much cheaper device is Weber Mass. An impedance selectable attenuator.

You better check out the price before saying it is cheaper than a couple preamp tubes. I think the Weber Mass is about $300.

The 100w Mass is $225 and the lite is $160 new. His amp is what? 40w? That should cover it. Not cheaper than a tube of course, cheaper than hot plate, definitely.

Another and even cheaper alternative is an Omnisonic volume box. They can be found on ebay. I bought one for my BDRI for about $25 shipped. It plugs into the effects loop and it has really tamed mine. I am a noob so I am not saying that it's better than what these more experienced members have suggested. I am just putting in my 2 cents.

I swapped my drive and master pots. It adds a little more grind and a little better volume control. Best value might be 500K on both, although I haven't tried it yet.
