hi

decided to buy a tube amp, not sure what one yet, probaly the blues junior (tweed).

forgive my stupidness on this issue but,

im planning to buy some pedals, boss blues driver ect... as well one day.

is it worth running pedals such as blues drivers , tube screamers ect.. through a tube amp, will it only improve the sound or would it cheapen it????? because the tones pretty sweeeeet anyway!!

i ask this because, at present i have fender frontman 25r, and i brought a digitech rp70, and to be honest i think most of the time the rp70 makes it feel and sound a bit cheap to me! and i hardly ever use it now!

any input you have would be appreciated! :D

The Blues Junior and most tube amps respond quite well to pedals. like the Tube screamer.

Have a listen to a BJ with an EQ and an OD pedal, few other demos of the BJ to be found here. As well as a neat OD pedal comparator application.

I prefer the Maxon brand variants of the Ibanez TS-808 to the TS-9 ones but they are all good. :)

Louis, get the amp first and live with it for a while. You may find that in the style you play, you may not want to color your sound at all. Get the amp first and go from there. 8) Mike

What Cherokee said. Pick the amp based on what you like in a clean sound. Then if you want to do something the amp's not doing, find a pedal you like. Frankly the only pedal I really use is a ProCo Rat.

You will get the over driven tube sound from the amp itself anyway if you turn the volume high enough to get the tubes nice and hot. If it gets too loud to achieve that's when a TS pedal might come into play.

looking into the stock tolex blues junior! it seems most people arnt happy with it and upgrade it! theres a whole bloody website specifically for upgrades for the blues junior! whats that all about then?

it is my understanding that the tweed 1 is already upgraded .. jenson speaker ect... is that correct?? it does sound alot better! where i will get the amp from its 100 pounds more for the tweed. worth it???? im starting to think so! but then its just another £59 for the blues deluxe if i put the other hundred in!! arggghhh

does anyone have the tolex one? and is completly satisfied with the tone?

wish i lived near a good shop that has these amps in stock so i could try them out!!! :x

I suppose you could call it that. Early 80's I think. I have a hard time calling anything I bought new in my lifetime as "vintage". I guess that makes me vintage, LOL.

I think that the tweed BJ is worth it based on looks alone...it's got a mojo all its own; definitely missing on the black tolex. But the upgraded speaker makes a difference as well. Although I haven't A/B'd them, my tweed Bj is super warm, and from the youtube videos, the tolex sounds more "biting," which may be your cup of tea. It depends on preference. As a mostly clean to mildly overdriven player, I like my tone warm.

I have a question for you. What do you plan to use the amp for? Home use? Jamming with other guitarists? With a drummer? Gigging?

The BJs break up relatively early (based on the "can it hang with a drummer" mentality). For my uses - home and light jamming with others - the BJ is perfect. It breaks up nicely at a reasonable volume and has excellent tone. But if you plan on purchasing a "main" tube amp to hang with any drummer, then you might want to consider the blues deluxe. Nice warm Fender tone. My only complaint about the BD is a weak reverb. There's also the Deluxe Reverb (my main amp). Amazing tone and the BEST reverb. Breaks up nicely when pushed, yet can hang with moderate drummers.

hi djv18,

yeah just for home use, but it is gonna be my main amp for a number of years! thats why im prepared to pay that bit extra for a better amp. no plans yet to gig with it!

and from the reviews ive read, tooo many people are saying the tolex one doesnt quite cut the mustard!
and the tweed has amazing reviews and has a wow factor when you first play it apparently!

and like you i like it warm :D
my guitar shop trying to get me one, havent heard from yet! i really dont want to mail order it!

cheers
