I got one just the other day, pretty nice little amp even if fender had to make its little changes to the original champ design (If it isn't broken why fix it?). But yeah, with some nice tubes in there it sounds very nice and doesn't alert the neighbors like mah HRDV 212 does. Hot humbuckers overwhelm the poor little speaker, but if u got single coils or a nice warm bucker you'll be in business. Or you can get an extension cab and really open it up. Overall, pretty satisfied, I picked mine up for $199 at the music store near me, but I would hesitate to buy it for the 260 gc and others are selling it at. Put it against the super and vibro champ models, you might like the extra versatility or prefer to keep it simple like mahself. What sold me was the overdrive through a tele bridge pickup *drool*

It really is a great amp. It's very simple and has that "Strange Brew" and "Crossroads" tone written all over it. Also great for Purple Haze. It's pretty much a one trick pony, but the overdriven 6 inch speaker is just a necessity. Trust me it's that awesome. 8)

Hello Paulie G,

I've had mine a while and use it regularly
no complaints really, but battery operation
would complete my needs.

Cheers.

A battery operated tube amp...now that would be a best-seller...

I would love to buy a 600, but my funds can't handle it right now. Whenever I go to GC it's what I plug any prospective guitars into because it doesn't let anything hide; just pure tone.

Sorry to steer the thread in another direction, but is the Gretsch G5222 the same as the Champion 600? I know that they modified the 600 to give it more gain, but is it the same for the G5222? None of my local shops carry the Gretsch, but I like the looks and price tag better than the 600 and I might pick one up if they break up the same. Thanks.

But for the original poster, the 600 is a sweet amp. I would buy one in a second if the price was right.

They are very close, but I'd have to say stock right out of the box the Champ is better cuz the speaker in the Gretsch can't handle any kind of OD whatsoever. But once you start moddin, the amps are very similar, just a matter of personal taste. But if you keep em stock, the Champ is the way to go.

I was trying not to use it until I got my '52 tele back from a rewire/set up, but I plugged in my Danelectric Dc'59 and it is fantastic. I'm delighted with it but cant wait to hook up my '52!

:D :D :D

Cool. I had the chance to try one through a 12" extension cabinet. That amp totally comes alive with a bigger speaker. The stock 6" always sounded slightly boxy to me.

Battery powered tube amps do exist. I've never tried one though.

A plus is you won't get any 60 cycle hum.

That's sounds like a cool amp. Costs a little bit more than my Pignose, though...

I went to GC yesterday planning to buy one with the new price drop, but after trying one out I was unsure to say the least.

The one I played was brand new, still in the box until I got there...they opened it right in front of me when I asked to give it a test. I played both a MIM standard and American standard through it and the speaker was hissing, popping and cracking the hole time...it didn't change if I moved the cable around, but Itried 2 different cables just in case. It wasn't overwhelming, but was loud enough that it would have definitely annoyed me if I were playing in the quieter confines of my own home.

Is this typical of the stock speaker or was my experience unusual? Only a handful of the reviews I've read mentioned this, and I haven't heard those noises on the YouTube vids I've watched of stock/unmodified Champ 600s.

I wanted to like it, but left without one.

May be a bad tube out of the box. Why does Fender packages their amps with crappy tubes like that from the factory?

Because they own Groove Tubes. Groove Tubes is a tube supplier, not a manufacturer. They use Taiwanese power supply caps too, just because American made caps are larger and more expensive. But the American caps can last for 20 years and sometimes longer.
