Hi,

i'm thinking about adding a bit more low end to my Super Reverb Reissue. Does anyone have experience with connecting an additional 2x12" cabinet?
Is it worthwhile? Would a band master VM 212 work out (8 Ohm impedance)?

Welcome to the forums!

I think that Super Reverb amps had 2-ohm output transformers to accomodate the four 8-ohm speakers wired in parallel.

The recommended total impedance is 2
ohms, which doesn't let you plug any extension speaker in without
mismatching the recommended load.

Also,
Fender amps use shorting jacks on the main speaker output.
This means that if you plug a cabinet into the extension jack with nothing in the main jack the output transformer will be shorted.

While this is better than no load connected (or a sharp stick in the eye), it may trick you into turning the volume up all the way and driving the amp hard into a short - not good.

A better approach would be to leave the Super Reverb speaker wiring
alone, and use TWO external 4x12 cabinets, each wired for 4 ohms.
Unplug the Super's speakers and plug one 4x12 cabinet into the main
jack and the other into the extension jack. This will give you the
desired 2-ohm load, and allow you to unplug both and plug the internal
speakers back in if desired.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the explanation. I have been asking around as well and because the external speakers are in parallel with the "on board" speakers. To keep the impedance at 2 Ohm you could follow your advise. But that is costlier. You could also choose for a 2 x12" cabinet which MUST be 4 Ohm in parallel. The Total impedance of this cabinet would then be 2 Ohm. 2 times 2 Ohm in parallel is 2 Ohms so no inbalance.

Now to find a cabinet like this! Fender does not make this configuration.

For those who are interested. I had a mail conversation with Fender and in the end I received the message that a 4 Ohm cab would work. So I'm going to check out the Vibro-king 212B Enclosure

I just rewired a 4x10 cabinet to 2 ohm for my Super Reverb. I Wish I'd have seen this thread before I did it but I am happy with the results.

8 x 10 at 7 vol will remove paint from low flying aircraft!

Hi RR. IMHO Fender advised the use of the 4ohm cab because it would present a nominal impedance of 3ohms load to the amp. This is a perfectly safe way to go, but is not the optimal load. The options suggested are fine as long as the impedance is not less than 2ohms. Another method would be to disconnect two internal speakers(yielding 4ohms) and using another 4ohm cab(now yielding 2ohms). But I don't think that's what you want out of this scenario. Instead, I would get a Weber Z Matcher. It's a safe and versatile devise that will allow you a wide choice of external speaker cabs. www.tedweber.com ART
