I've had my 57 Champ for about a week. With the volume on or above 6, I'm getting a buzzing sound that seems to be coming from the top of the cabinet. The buzz only happens when I play certain chords. I took it back to the store, and their amp tech said it sounded like normal overdrive to him. The fact that it only happens at certain frequencies makes me a bit skeptical.

Anyone else have this experience?

If I want to try to isolate the chassis from the cabinet, is there a certain type of gasket material I should look for?

Thanks.

Andy

Is this the new 57 Champ RI that sells for a grand?

If it is, take it back and make them replace it. If you can, try plugging it into another cabinet. That's a lot of cash for a 5 watt amp. It shouldn't buzz and you shouldn't have to mess with it. It's supposed to be a nice well built cabinet. My 74 SF Champ don't buzz and I only paid $150 for it LOL.

All kidding aside, just return it and tell them you want another one. Try it out with your guitar before you take it home. That's a lot of hard earned cash.

Yes it's the new reissue. Unfortunately I ordered it during a special promotion at the store (I got some cash back from Fender and a gift card for the store), so they told me up front that all sales were final. If the buzz is not easily fixed, I'll probably offer to give back the incentives in order to return the amp.

Make sure all the speaker nuts are secure. Sometimes if one or two are loose it will vibrate at certain frequencies. Don't overtighten them if you find this to be the case, you'll warp the speaker frame. Mike

Depending on where you live, all sales may not be final if the product you purchased is defective. It would be a good faith move on behalf of the store you purchased it from to make good on it. Good luck with it I hope it works out for you.

Does it say on your reciept that "All sales are Final" or sold as-is? I thought all Fender amps came with a 5 year transferable warranty. Sounds like your music store might be a bunch of Shysters.

Yes, it said all sales final because of the special promotion. I took it to an official Fender service center and was told that the buzz is not a defect, it's a result of overdriving the amp. I was hoping to get it repaired under warranty, so I think I'll try another shop to get a second opinion. I guess I expected nice crunchy overdrive, which I got, but without what I perceive as a cabinet buzz.

Was the amp used or turned back in by someone else before you got it? If brand New and you are the original owner you should be able to get a new one out of the box or have that one fixed to your satisfaction! Regardless of a in store promotion!

It was special ordered, so it was new. I haven't been able to get anyone to tell me definitively whether or not it's defective. So far the opinions are that it is not. And now I'm not sure either - maybe it's not. Maybe I was simply mistaken about my expectations for this particular amp.

My guess it is a) crappy stock tubes biased too cold or b) speaker hasn't broken in yet.
I don't believe it's defective beyond those two things simply because I cannot see how they could make a mistake building a champ by hand. It's so easy to build a caveman can do it. If the Fender Custom Shop screwed up a hand-built champ it would be like a professional bartender not being able to make kool-aid.

Of course this is just my opinion, hopefully this lil situation will work itself out. Best of luck man ^^

Thanks for the responses. I'll have to get out to some stores to play some more new Champs This way I can figure out if my amp is actually "normal" and it's just a matter of misplaced expectations.

Just curious if anyone else who has this amp has heard buzzing or any other unusual noises.

Andy,

A couple of things that you can check. See that the speaker screws; back panel vent and the tube cage screws are tight. If they are tight, take it into the service center. They will figure it out.

If you have access to an external speaker cabinet, unplug the internal speaker jack and plug in a 4 ohm minimum impedance external cabinet and see if the buzz goes away. If it does you have ruled out the amp itself and isolated it to the cabinet/speaker.

Product: Fender 57' Custom Champ Reissue (Assembly Defect)
Chassis mounted to cabinet incorrectly, chassis mounted 6/32" too far toward back of amp.

Symptom:
Excessive metalic noise and/or tube rattle sound at mid-volume and above.

Cause : Sympothetic vibration from Rectifer and Power tube - "Tube Clips" protruding 2/32"
past chassis edge contacting tube protector cage (2/32" thick) attached to inner rear panel.

Even with tube protector cage removed from back panel, the back panel continues to make contact
with tube clips, causing symptom and shortening tube life expectancy from excessive vibration.
There should be a gap between chassis assembly components (tube clips) and the tube protector
cage. At the very least, a single sheet of paper should be able to pass between without binding.

Wasn't easy to diagnose. I am returning for replacement or refund.
