I've heard that the FM series of amplifiers can overheat. Has anyone had this experience?

Any amp can overheat for any prolonged amount of play time. But SS amps aren't really known for overheating that often, that problem mainly lies with tube amps.

I've had an FM 212 DSP for nearly a year and I have have no problems with it overheating. Actually stays quite a bit cooler than my tube amp, as one might expect.

In fact, the amp has been very reliable so far -- no maintenance issues, whatsoever. It's a pretty decent backup amp. Tone isn't nearly as good as a tube amp, but its relatively lightweight and pretty durable.
