Hi. I'm thinking of buying a Blues Jr. My local shop has the limited-edition tweed version for £450, which is a bit too much, but i can get the standard version for just over £300 online. I've played the tweed one in the shop, and it was the best amp i've ever used, but they didn't have the standard on to compare with. I can't find it much cheaper online(£430 at best), so is the tweed version really that much better? I know tone is a subjective thing, but has anyone here lined the two BJs up back to back? Also, while i'd never spend £300-400 on a guitar without playing it first, should i risk mail-ordering an amp?

Thanks

Marge

I THOUGHT that the tweed version only differed cosmetically from the standard BJ. Perhaps someone who is sure will chime in.

There's another thread which seems to indicate the Tweed has a better (Jensen) speaker.

Sometimes they put a better speaker in them. The tweed is just cosmetic. It replaces the Tolex. Only you will be able to tell if if it's any better.

Ah yes. Forgot to mention that part. The tweed version has a Jensen P12R or N, and the standard BJ has a Fender-designed speaker, possibly by Eminence. By most accounts i've read, all the electronics are the same; only the coverings and badging is different. Confusing the issue still further, the Fender dealer near my girlfriends house says that both versions list at the same price, £450. He had a Pro Junior and a Hot Rod Deluxe in stock, but neither version of the BJ. PJ too simple(vol and tone) and HRD too big(40w)and over £500! Damn it!

Regards

Marge

I wouldn't be so fast to write off the Pro Jr as being "too simple." It's a great -sounding amp, surprisingly loud, and the tone control is more useful than you may be giving it credit for. Some players gig with Pro Jr's. If you haven't given it a good workout, I'd suggest giving it a second look. YMMV.

Point taken Sonicman. I've tried the Pro Jr briefly, and it does sound really good, as does the Champ 600, and that's only got a volume knob. Fender's clean tones are really something special. However, that tweed BJ i tried has left a permanent imprint on me. It was unpleasantly hot in the sound booth of the shop that day and i was sweating profusely as a result, but it was as much as i could do to switch it off and walk away. I may have already persuaded myself, but i'd still like to know if anyones compared the two.

Regards

Marge

If cosmetics are important to you then by all means get the the vintage tweed. Both amps are going to sound good. The vintage Jensen speaker will sound slightly different, but from a sound standpoint you will like both. I prefer the tweed covering, and even that can vary from one amp to another. Cosmetically, I just think the tweed stands out, but yes the tweed covering and Jensen speaker do cost more. Most companies allow 30-45 days to return with no questions asked if you decide you dont like it. I have purchased several amps online, most were great and I kept them, some were not and I sent them back. Just check the retailers return policy. Good luck...

hi marge I have a blues jr in standard,it is a really good amp.I don't have any complaints two years in.The only thing I would love is if people would post there favorate settings. One really good setting is set your Master to 0, Volume 12,Treb12,Bass12,Mid12,Reverb1,turn all guitar nobs to 10, then slowly turn up your Master, this setting will give you a real killer gain without having to buy pedels.

Also, the resale value of the tweed will be a lot better than the standard. The limited edition hot rod stuff is fetching pretty good prices on the used market. As far as the comparison, I've never played through a tweed version. I own the standard black tolex version and I love it. I'm sure the different speaker makes some difference. I'm thinking of puting a vintage 30 in mine.
