Hi,

I have had several amps and was never quite satified with the tonal quality, Then, a friend recommended the Hot Rod DeVille and so I went to Guitar Center and tried it. I must say it was absoultely wonderful. I also tired to Twin Reverb and I really didn't care for it. So I bought the HotRod DeVille (yesterday).. I took it home, and boy, for the first time could I hear the nuiances in my guitar that has a 5 way rotary switch (i was never ever able to hear those differences so cleary). But I realize that you can not hook up effects and send it to a mixer at the same time.

So here is my question:

I went on-line and saw the supersonic and noticed that it had more feartures (in's and out's) and so I went to a store that had the supersonic. I noticed it had a Vibrolux and a bassman switch, However, I found that I didn't like the sound as much. I found it wasn't as nice tonally as the HRD. Am I missing something because its like 400 dolllars more. (is the vibrolux the same as the twin reverb because maybe thats why i did like it as much)

Do they make a HRD with a sperate loop for a mixer?

Please advice. I have a week to return the DeVille.

Thanks so much in advance,
Lguitarjsm

I don't think your ears are deceiving you. I'm in the same boat. I posted a thread about the amazing tone of the HRD. I owned a supersonic head and 212 cab for a few months. No matter how you tweaked it you couldn't equal the tone of the HRD. The fact you noticed the nuances of the picking means you've found the secret of this amazing tone of the HRD. Maybe it's the SS rectifier, who knows. Your mind tells you the twin reverb, 59 bassman, or supersonic should be better than the HRD. After all, they cost a lot more. It's all about tone. When I was a twin reverb guy I had to use pedals to get great live tone. With my HRD I can run it straight and get angelic tone. I've gotten a lot of compliments about my guitar tone since I've been running straight HRDs. The longer you have yours the more you'll love it.

Whatever works for you, tone is totally subjective. Too often these forums turn into shouting matches over what piece of gear is better, who is the greatest guitar player of all time, etc. Arguing over this crap is a waste of time and really turned me off to these type of forums for a long time. I have better things to do, like play music.

Anyway, back to the amp, playing through a Supersonic in the music store may not impress you initially because, 1) the speaker is not broken in, 2) the bias is probably set too cold, and 3) it has crappy stock Groove Tubes. Once those issues are addressed it is a great sounding amp with cool features (in my opinion). And I have owned Twin Reverb, Blues Deville, Bassman, and others.
