Hi guys,

I know that a lot has been said about this amp, but I have a question that sound clips haven't been real good at. I play blues and rock. How close does this amp get to the Clapton sound? I know without buying the top of the line amp, I won't get there, but is this amp close? What does everyone think of this amp? I would like to stay in the $300-$500 range. I would also like a tweed cover. I think I can get this amp in that range, and just wanted to know what others thought.

Tone is always so subjective. All in all I think the blues jr. is a great buy. I thought it was an even better buy before the prices got cranked up. You can probably find 100+ videos on Youtube. That helps me a lot when considering an amp. I bought an NOS blues jr. as a practice amp and I really like it. There's a guy on Youtube playing Texas Flood with one and it sounds great. That tipped it for me so I bought it. With my strats I can easily get a sweet SRV tone out of them. All I do is switch to the neck pickup and I get a thicker Clapton (Cream/Crossroads) tone.

Again, it's all a matter of taste. Determine your budget then try every amp you can find for that price. Check out Youtube. Almost any amp you're considering you'll find a lot of demos out there.

I looked on youtube and I was impressed. But I thought that I would get some advice from the great forum members here. I will be near a music store tonight that sells them (I am about 70 miles away from a great dealer) so I thought that I would check it out tonight. I have a princeton chorus amp, but I can never get the tone I want. I use some pedals, but then I lose some volume and tone. I want an amp that I can plug straight into it with limited to no pedals.

Thanks again!

The hot rod series is great for playing it straight. If you see a NOS version of the blues jr. (it's the lacquered tweed version) give that a try. I liked it better than the standard blues jr. but the standard is really nice too.

If this is just for an at-home amp you should check out the super champ and vibro champ as well. They're tube amps with different amp voices and effects built in. They're pretty cool.

It is mainly for at home use, but I have played out from time to time. No big places, but I want something that will handle playing out too. Thanks for all the advice!

I love my BJ. I find these to be the best settings for overdrive/Bluesrock:

Volume: 7
Treble: 9
Bass: 10
Middle: 8
Master: 8.5
Reverb: sometimes

At these settings, the BJ isn't out of control, but it really shows the best characteristics of the amp to me. I personally think these settings resemble an early marshall. But that's just me. If you can withstand the sheer volume. :D

I've never cranked my blues jr. that much, I only use it for a practice amp. How does it hold up at that level? My HRD 410s you can bury the volume at 12 and they still sound perfect. Intensely massive volume but still almost perfect sound.
