Most anything with tubes will work. I'd look at Fender's Reissue series. I'm pretty sure all the guys you listed have used vintage Fender , Marshall and a variety of other amps. I have a DRRI and love it. Try stuff out, that's the only way to find what you really want.

Quite a variety of tones.SRV used alot of different amps.Might try a Fender tweed amp such as the 59 bassman, or maybe a marshall tube amp.

Yep.... Seriously. Any of the above would work. Don't forget the Tube Screamer and you'll be golden. Just think outside the Hot Rod, Blues Jr. box. Bassmans and Super Reverbs as well as Deluxe Reverbs are great. It just depends on you power requirements.

how much $ can you spend?

I've a Blues Jr. NOS and a DRRI. Highly recommend them. Substantial price difference. Obviously if the $ is there, would recommend a DRRI at minimum. I think, all things considered, the Deluxe Reverb is quite possibly the best amp Fender's ever produced. It's basically half a Twin Reverb which is to me the ultimate for raw clean power.

I'd like a Twin Reverb and a Super Reverb, but these'll do. For now.

I'd suggest you get as much Fender Tube as you can afford, and in the right environment, you'll get more amp when you find a good deal on something pre loved.

If you want the best bang for your buck, i would think used.I know you can buy a 59 bassman reissue for anywhere from 500 to 800.I just got a 75 super reverb for about 650 in really nice shape.Another amp to check out is the Marshall Bluesbreaker.

A lightly used Deluxe Reverb Reissue can be had for around $600-650,sometimes less. Used 59 Bassman Ri's are reasonable too. Great amps, serious tone. I'd steer clear of anything related to the Hot Rod series if you plan on any serious gigging. The Ampeg J20 is nice and so is the Egnator Rebel 20. The Egnator is seriously versatile too. I'm thinking about dumping my HRDlx for one if I can get a decent price for it.

SRV was mainly a 64 Vibrolux guy. Page is a Marshall JTM guy. Hendrix was Marshall JTM and Hiwatt 100 mix guy. Clapton has switched many times, being a fellow perpetual tone chaser. I've seen him play the Vibrolux, Marshall JTM's, bluesbreakers, Twin Reverbs, and a few others.

Been watching them on the bay myself, thinking of picking up a second one, and that's exactly what I've seen them get as well. An excellent way to go.

Actually SRV used a variety of amps, but my understanding was he leaned heavily on the Super reverb, dumble, vibroverb , bassman and marshall amps.It depends on what era.In his "In Step " era , he used Vibroverbs, Super Reverbs and 59 Bassman RI.He also used Twins alot too.

To me, I would look at a mesa. Marshall and Fender seem to be good at one sound only, and they are the opposite of each other. My brother has a F50 that has a nice lead channel and a fender like clean...very nice sounding amp

Trj, i have a hot rod deluxe, 40 watt tube amp, and for under 1000 it is an amazing amp. great clean channel and for overdrive its just great. At 40 watts, this amp is very loud. I have not even passed three in my house yet! Good luck in choosing one!

I seriously doubt you can find a Mesa for under a grand.
