I hear you. It makes me wonder though why Fender uses GT's when there are other tube options that sound so much better.

Because Aspen Pittman sold Groove Tubes to Fender.

http://www.groovetubes.com/assets/1769_ ... letter.pdf

They still provide OEM tubes to other manufacturers, though. My Rebel came with a set of Egnater-branded GT's, and they sound great. It sounded even better with the NOS tubes I put in the preamp, but the power tubes are still Egnater/GT's.

I was thinking that. I was just too lazy to check it out. Thanks. I wouldn't bother with NOS tubes in HRDlx. The Rebel or that Ampeg J20, that's a different story.

63, I did it because I wanted 5751's in the preamp to lower the gain, and the good ones I could find were NOS.

It sounds really good like this, but next I want to try a 5751 in V1 and the stock 12ax7 in V2.

But, like I say, the GT power tubes sound real good, as you know,.

New information for 63Supro:

I was looking up some information about how to bias the Rebel (piece of cake,BTW... there are measuring points and bias pots for each set of power tubes on the bottom of the cassis), and someone was wondering why replacing the GT's with JJ's produced no difference in sound or spec.

Jeff Hilligan, Managing partner of Egnater in Berkeley, MI replied:

"The Groove Tubes in your Rebel are JJ's labeled with their logo."

I don't know why they source the tubes through GT but spec JJ's, but that's what Egnater says and that's an explanation for why they are branded funny and sound so good.

Thanks SlapChop. I believe Groove Tubes does not manufacture tubes. They just test and match from different manufacturers. I could be wrong though. It may just be a convenience thing.

I've got a Deville 2x12 and I love it. Only thing, as another poster said, it does get pretty bright, which makes you wonder why they included the More Bright button.

So I'm home sick with the flu and reading this very interesting group of posts.

I gotta know what an 8K amp looks like, $8K really ????

My most expensive amp ever was my beloved Clark Piedmont, granted I bought it used and spent $1500 (killer deal) and it was the nicest hand wired 59 bassman clone I've ever played.

so........ 8K worth of amp and a Blues Deville sounded better.

And the explosive responses too !

Its one thing to be happy about a purchase, another to push it WAY !!! past its limitations.

The thread was two and a half years old before being resurrected. Which is cool I guess, recycling and all. I think that Highline was just saving time for us, here's a whole argument thread already done, we don't have to start one of our own.

Hey it was a good sick time read, made me laugh a few times and wince a few more.

My first re-entry into the amazing world of tube tone was an original 1993 tweed USA Blues Deville back in 2002 or so and it sounded excellent after a few replacement caps and resistors ect..... to get rid of the snap crackle pop they are so well known for.

Me and my accoustic (an original Ovation I bought new in 1984) were best buds up till then.

My first tube amp in the 70's and 80's was a silvertone head and 2x12 cab that shocked the crapolla out of us every time we reached for the mic stand LOL !!!!

I'm back to one single DRRI and lov'n it !

My favorite amp was a '66 blackface princeton reverb with the jenson speaker. Also had a '69 silverface with the oxford speaker.

I'm using a mustang I now. It's not as good as the '66 but it is very versatile and meets my humble needs surprisingly well.

Cheers,

(applies to the entire hot-rod series, not bad budget amps, but you get what you pay for.)
