That is very cool.

Have a similar guitar story?

Yep. My 72 Strat was a graduation present from my folks and I still have that too. My 63 Supro, that I just learned may be in fact a 61 or 62 from a Supro serial number site, I've had since I was 11 years old. It was used when I got it and it was my first "real" electric guitar. I still have it a play it on a regular basis.

It's just fun stuff. These guitars are a huge part of my life. I'd never sell them just for sentimental reasons. They are both original. My Strat still has the 3 way switch. You have to balance the switch between the first and second position or second or third positions to get the in between sounds. I've never had the problems associated with the 70's Strats. It still sounds and plays great. I do want to get a new fret job on it though. I also have a 57 Dano that was found in the trash by my friend and he just gave it to me. It's beat up but very playable.

Guys, let's make sure this convo gets back on track to healthy gear discussion as it's dipped into a name-calling-fest including a few terms unacceptable on these forums at points. Big brother is watching. :-)

Fender must think the HRD amps are the greatest amps on earth since their price has essentially doubled in the last 7-8 years! I wanted to get the 1x12 extension cabinet and was shocked to see that it cost just as much now as my HRDeluxe did when I bought it in '01. Hella-Inflation.

My HRDeluxe died a couple of months ago so mine surely isn't the greatest amp of all time. I was able to get the sounds I wanted out of it but it lacked the head room to play unmiked gigs.

Does anybody use the distortion channels on these amps? I find the "more drive" channel displeasing and unneccessary.

oh yeah, I realize this thread was orginally about the HRDevilles so flame away...

I completely agree with you about the headroom issue on the deluxe. The Deville 410 completely eliminates that. It's got all the headroom anyone could ever want. It's a shame yours died. I own 4 HRDs and never had to do anything other than replace tubes occasionally.

Well, I am just a recreational player. I own a Blues Junior and a Valveking 112. I just purchased a HRD 410 for $410. It is an early model, made in the U.S.A., that someone replaced the speakers with G10L-35 Celestion speakers. I have not taken it in to GC to AB it to a stock HRD, but I think it sounds just awesome. Especially when using P90s or Fender single coils.

If I had an amp I hated, I'd get rid of it and stop bothering everyone else about theirs. Ax grinding at best. BFD.

You can't post anything on any subject on this forum without the same people blathering on about themselves and stuff they may or may not know anything about. This same know-it-alls go around stepping all over people who are trying to help others out, giving bad advice about stuff they have no clue about.

This forum's good for talking about peoples' opinions, but I think the Fender Forum is a little better for technical stuff. There are really helpful people on that board who are enjoyable to converse with. That's my experience. Not much ax grinding going on over there.

That's a killer deal you found. Very nice. I agree on the sound.

Got to throw in an additional comment.

I have a Hot Rod Deville 410. Bought it late last year because I wanted something better than the $100 Line 6 that I had been using. I hoped it would do more for me....it did...it showed me in blaring clarity that I needed to do a hell of a lot more practicing. I have only vague memories of amps that I got to mess with back in the 60's.

What I lack in guitar skills I have tried to overcome with throwing money at the "problem".....and finally realized that I'm only as good as I am and will stay that way unless I do more practicing.....for that revelation I thank the Hot Rod Deville.

Now I might argue that Hot Rod Deville is the coolest name for an amp...think Huge - Fins - Trunk as Big as a House - too long to turn a curb corner and stay in the lane cool. :P

The thing with www.thefenderforum.com is that they are not an equipment manufacture. That is why people with an axe to grind come here hoping Fender will listen. Also many of the member here seem to be young guys just starting out. Which is a good thing and a bad thing. Just mention Gibson here and you'll see what I mean.

Mention the Hot Rod series amp over at TFF and you will get no love for those amps. The members there talked me through many repairs that I just couldn't figure out on my own. Many build their own amps.
I belong there too, (under a different name) and have sent many people from here over there with different problems. TFF'rs are a pleasure to talk to and don't get all defensive if you don't like their guitars or amps. They like to hear about all equipment, not just Fender guitars and amps.

When I sell a piece of equipment, I sell it because I don't need it any more. I can't with a good conscience sell a dog amp to an unsuspecting person. I'll just wait till the warranty runs out and build another amp in the chassis and hopefully get to use some of the existing iron. In the meantime, if someone wants an opinion on the Hot Rod series, I'll give it to them and try to steer them in an upgraded direction so they won't be saddled with a dog too. Some people love these amps and if it works for you great. Personally, I like having trouble free equipment that lasts for decades and is not in a landfill in5 or 10 years.

At least there used to be.

The smart guys at TFF seem to have wandered off behind the little animals.

Very nice. You mean more than one company makes guitars? :D
Your kind of like me. I'd rather have a bunch of different guitars. It a sonic pallet of sorts. They're tools of the trade. I even have a Ibanez AS73 that I may put Gibby Burstbuckers in because it plays so nice.
I might be a lot of things, but I'm not a guitar snob. I call em as I see em and play what I like. Sometimes I gig with my trashcan Dano.
