I've owned them all. From cheapie solid states to $8000 boutique tube amps. I have to say overall that my Hot Rod Deville 410 is the finest amp in the history of guitar amps. I've put it side by side with a Fender Twin Reverb, Supersonic, Marshall bluesbreaker, and a Mesa Boogie Lonestar. My 410 Deville always sounds better. Even the owners of the other amps would say this and I notice more than a few of them ended up buying a Deville. It's such a simple amp design and it's even got a solid state rectifier. Kudos to Fender on this amp, I hope they keep them in their lineup forever. BTW, I've bought a MIM HRD last year and it's just as nice as my MIA HRD. I wish they hadn't cranked the price up to $1000 but still, it's a great amp at that price too. Anyone got an amp they like better than an HRD?

Did the Twin damage your hearing? :D
I guess it's all what you like. Personally, I have a few better sounding and a lot more reliable amps than my HRDlx without changing tubes, the speaker and modding them.

Just my opinion though, and YMMV as I'm sure it does.

I have a 59 bassman reissue and a blues deluxe.I think the deluxe has decent tone, but my bassman smokes it.Not even in the same league.I had to take the BM apart and it is built so much better than the deluxe.

I doubt they're the best ever, but in my opinion they're pretty darn good! I just picked up a used DeVille 212 and I love it -- the clean tone, especially, sounds great. My bandmate is currently using a Twin Reverb -- so far, my new amp seems to be holding its own against his pretty well.

I do think the overdrive channels could be a little better -- but I think most of us use pedals for distortion, anyway...

I have a HR Deville 410 and it certainly does a fine job. I think that it represents very good performance for the money (value) but is certainly not the best amp in the history of amps. I don't think the best amp will ever be made....personal taste and all that.

Hello KYBlues man,

Those Hot Rod 410 Devilles are nice,
But nothin can touch a twin reverb.
{we're talking fender line-up here}.
Just my thoughts.

Cheers.

I've been doing quite a bit of research on the Deville lately, and while most reviews seem to be positive, I couldn't help but notice the fairly large amount of people that had problems with them. Have you guys experienced any issues? Is there a certain internal component of the amp that's causing these failures?

Also, how does the 4x10 comepare to the 2x12 tonally?

I have had a HR deluxe and presently own a Blues Deluxe and i have not had any issues, but I dont gig alot either.I think the people who do have had problems.I think its one of those amps that is hit and miss. Some guys gig with them alot with no problems and others with nothing but problems. As far as the 2-12s vs the 4-10s , i have 2- 4-10 amps and to my ears they sound fuller and airier than the 2-12s, JMHO.

I haven't seen too many $8000 boutique amps. Even Marshall's Hendrix stack is a tiny bit under that.

Bull.

I'm with 63Supro.... your hearing must be shot, as would be the hearing of any Boogie Lonestar owner hallucinating that a DeVille sounded better.

My hearing is fine and I love the DeVille...............its not an amp think, its a desired tone thing. I sold my Twin years ago to get a DeVille cos it suited me more..........a lot more. 63supro is notorious on this site for his hate of HRD amps. Its a PERSONAL TASTE thing.......not a competition.

Before buying my DeVille I compared the 4x10 to the 2x12 at my local music store. I had them side-by-side, each set at the exact same levels. The 2x12 seemed a little bit bassier while the 4x10 seemed to have a slightly warmer, fuller sound. The difference was pretty slight, though, to my ears. And I imagine at higher volumes the difference would be even less noticeable.

I hate the HRDlx for good reasons. I never said it sounded awful. With tube changes and a new speaker it's fine. It's a reliability and quality issue. When you plunk down your hard earned cash for something that you make even a partial living with, and it can't perform more than a couple months at a time, your pissed period. I don't care if it's a Fender, Marshall, Ampeg. Competition has nothing to do with it. In my 40+ years of playing and recording, I've never had an amp as unreliable as my HRDlx. Nothing wrong with PERSONAL TASTE, but don't get your panties in a bunch if I don't like something that you do.

KYBluesman, I'm very glad to hear about your satisfaction with the HRDlx amp. I'm sure the others would congratulate you as well as soon as they're done bickering. 8)
