At my last gig the electric guitarist in band that was opening for us was playing a Blues Junior. His tone was AWESOME. And now I'm stuck with some serious GAS for a small, portable tube amp. If I sell my Peavey Classic 30 for roughly $350, I'd about have enough for a (used, of course) Blues Junior. What are some other comparable small tube amps to the Blues Junior in that price range (for used) and is the Blues Junior the smallest tube amp Fender makes?

Hello Texasguitarslinger,

Smallest tube amp ---Champion 600
5 watts and a neat little amplifier.
A true one-trick-pony.
Sadly they retail now for about $250

Cheers.

Fender also makes a Champion 600 i believe..It has 6v6 tubes. There is also the pro jr which 15 watts and has a 10 inch speaker. For vintage amps there is also the champ and vibro champ. And of course the Princeton Reverb at 15 watts.

If you are talking wattage, both the Champion 600 and the Vibrochamp are 5 watts. Nothing smaller.

I just need a good sounding portable practice amp for Austin (guitar workshop, you have to move from class to class). I have a Roland Micro Cube but I've been spoiled by my tube amps. I'm going to trade the Micro Cube and some other gear that's collecting dust in for a higher quality practice amp.

So far it's a toss up between a Champion 600 and a Vox AC4TV. I'd liked a blues junior, or a pro junior, but both of them are just out of my price range plus a blues junior is a little big for what I need it for.

I own the Champ 600 and it's pretty sweet sounding. It has some smooth cleans and when dimed used with humbuckers,I get a pretty useable White Stripes mild tone. The 6 inch speaker being pushed that hard is most of the distortion though. If you do spring for the AC4TV, please let me know how it goes as I am a sucker to small tube amps. 8)

Have you tried using an overdrive pedal with the Champion 600? Also, is it loud enough to gig with (mic'd, of course)?

This is a really hard decision. The good thing is that I have plenty of time to think about it while I sell some things to pay for it. I think my choice will probably be determined by how much money I can come up with and what kind of deals I can find on the internet. The Vox has a fairly loud volume, but since it's so new there won't be many of them on sale used. I really like the Champion 600's tone, but I'm concerned that it would be useless if I had an emergency and had to gig with it.

At 350 its really hard to find a good tube amp in that price range.A champion at 5 watts is really to use to gig with. One thing to consider is how well it cuts thru the mix.To be honest , i dont think i would sell the Classic 30 to get a Blues Jr.As much as i like the Blues Jr, at best it would be a latteral move.If memory serves me, the Peavey has 2 channels, more wattage and el84s.If I were you I would probably save more money and go with maybe a used DRRI.They give you the best clean out of any low wattage amp and you have tube reverb and tremolo. It takes pedals really well too. There is also the Princeton reverb at 15 watts.

Yeah, I changed my mind about the selling the Peavey for a Blues Jr. As much as I like the Blues Jr, that trade just doesn't really make sense. I'd basically be trading a medium sized amp for a smaller medium sized amp. And I think that if I run the Peavey along with my Deluxe VM at gigs, I can make use of the Peavey as a sort of volume boost if I need it. I've got to figure out a way to do that.

I still need a practice amp though, so I think that between selling my current practice amp (roland micro cube) and adding what money I have saved up I should be able to afford a used Champion 600. I think the Vox will be just out of reach price wise, and I need it before late July. I'll probably bring either my Classic 30 or my Deluxe VM to Austin with me in case I have to gig with it. I just hate to leave them in the hotel room, if my Peavey were stolen there goes my only backup amp and if the Fender was stolen I'd be devastated. I would have to wait months before I could think about replacing it.

Do major clubs usually have house guitar amps? And are those amps usually good quality? It's sort of my first time playing one of the more popular clubs (and it's a jam session, lots of musicians will be there), so I don't really know what to expect.

Think seriously about the Champ 600. It sounds absolutely pants once you get it distorting. Keep it clean and it's beautiful. The close proximity of speaker and valve means you get a very unpleasant high frequency rattling noise creeping in as the volume goes up.

I took mine back and tried another 5 of the things in the store to see if it was a one off. Of those, 3 didn't work at all.

I left the store with an Epiphone 5watt Valve junior. Brilliant for practise and great for recording.

I've decided that I'm going to take the amp I have to Austin and if I need a louder one, I'll get one there. It's not like there are no music stores there.
That way if it turns out that my Micro Cube is loud enough, I don't waste money on something I don't need.
