I'm thinking of purchasing a fender Hot Rod Deluxe or Hot Rod Deville amp. I read on the Marshall amp website and it reccomends replacing the Power Amp tubes every 2 years and Preamp tubes every 4 years. Is this necessary? Can I keep the original tubes in until they blow out or is this bad for the amp? How often would you reccomend replacing each kind of tube?

Tubes will degrade over time with use. Two years is a common time frame thrown about often but if you play a lot it could even be less. Check google or wikipedia for tubes and you'll find several interesting articles on the subject including how they work.

I agree. The NOS preamp tubes will last a lot longer than 4 years though.

Tubes can last for decades or hours. The tubes in my 74 Champ are original and are just starting to get a little weak. The tubes in my 64 Vibrolux Reverb lasted close to 20 years and I gigged a lot with that amp. I agree about newer tubes, but I wouldn't invest in NOS tubes in my HRDlx. Some of my older amps, sure, but not my HRDlx.

I've never changed a power amp tube in my life and I've had tube amps for donkey's years. I had two Devilles over a period of ten years and never had to change a single tube.
