Hello!

I just got a bassman 59 (production 1994). It sounds ok.
But i noticed the label in the back of the speaker cabinet (which explaines the type of tubes are used in this amp "Tube locations left to right"). Well, the first tube, the 5AR4 power rectifier tube isn't there.
Is that a problem??? Could it damage the amp or the other tubes? And is it expensive to buy a new tube?

Thanks in advance!

I have a 90s Bassman and if memory serves me right, you can either put a solid state rectifier or a tube rectifier.A tube rectifier should be fairly inexpensive.I would just get a new one.

You need a rectifier tube. I would not turn on the amp without one.

A solid state rectifier would have to be hard wired into the amp.

Yep, unless it was modded with a SS rectifier. Some people don't like the sag of a tube rectifier.

Thanks for the quick response.
I'm still not certain about this: could it damage my amp if i leave the first tube slot empty (and/or how do i know that it is modified)?

And what if someone made a mod to make it work without the first tube, and i will put a new tube in there???

If you are unsure take it to an amp tech and have it completely checked out.

Crazy idea but have you asked the guy you bought it from?

Yes, he said the previous owner sold the amp like this. He didn't know more about it.

So the guy must have played it as is. None the less, as suggested, I'd have a tech look at it thoroughly and give you a free estimate.

Is there anything plugged into the socket? The reason I ask is because back in the 60s, they made solid state replacements for tube rectifiers. They were designed to plug into the tube socket so the swap could be done in seconds with no soldering or other modifications.

As mentioned by others, silicon rectifiers eliminated the "faults" (sag and internal power consumption) of tube rectifiers. From memory, it was a direct replacement so if you have something like that plugged in, you should be able to swap it again for a tube.

Splendid! This is correct! There's is something black plugged into the socket. (so the tube isn't just "ripped" out).
Your explanation seems to be right!

It's great to have this response from all you out there, all the way up to 'little' Belgium ...
