Hey everyone, I'm thinking about getting a new amp to replace what I have now - a Kustom Dual 30RC. That was the first amp I bought when I started to learn to play guitar five years ago, and I'm starting to feel the need to upgrade.

Right now, I play an American Telecaster and occasionally my old Epiphone G400. Within the next three years I'm going to buy a Stratocaster. I usually run through an Original Crybaby, and I've been able to get by with the amp's overdrive when I need it (though I have a DigiTech Hot Head when I need a little bit of a bite).

I'm looking for something with a really nice tone. I'm getting more and more into blues-style playing, and John Mayer's sound is one of my bigger inspirations. I also like a lot of Hendrix and SRV. Guilty pleasures include blink-182 and other lighthearted stuff.

As far as price is concerned, I'm looking at spending at most a thousand. That doesn't necessarily discount amps that are list of over 1k, because I am willing to buy used on ebay (I saw a '65 Twin Reverb for $600).

I've looked into the '65 Twin Reverb, the Hot Rod DeVille 212, and I'm also thinking about a Two Rock. I am aware that the Twin Reverb does not have overdrive (unless you turn it all the way up, but I'm not interested in premature deafness).

Any and all advice would be much appreciated!

I saw a '65 Deluxe Reverb Reissue the other day on Kijiji for $900. You can probably get more amp if you go into the Hot Rod Series (the Deville), but I think the DRRI sounds better if you like classic Fender clean tones.

I think that if I had $1000 to spend on an amp, and I wanted something different, I'd buy a pair of Blues Juniors (or Pro Juniors) and run them in stereo, one dirty, one clean. It's unique and it sounds absolutely wicked. They do sound different from the standard 6L6-equipped Fenders though. Just a thought...

You should go to the music store and play everything they've got. In general, tweed-style Fenders are renowned for their breakup and dirt, while blackface amps are revered for their pristine cleans and dripping reverb.

How about a Fender Pro Reverb? I know of a company that sells Fender amps that have been damaged or flawed in some way. The lady that owns the store had a number of these tube amps available that looked and played great. They are actually new amps that needed some attention. Her company has addressed their needs and are selling them for somewhere around $599. I've purchased a couple solid state amps from her that were great buys. A Stage 160 DSP and a Frontman 212R. I can put you in touch with her if this might fit your needs. She's in Huntington Beach, Ca. Her shipping charges are reasonable too. She also has some others available but these Pro Reverbs are the best of her lot. At least that is what I saw at her shop. Sure wish I had the funds to get one for my own use. I give her technical advise from time to time and know what she has and what she does to make them right.

I would spend a little extra and go for the Supersonic! Love that amp. Go try one out.

If you are leaning towards the blues side of things, you can go several routes. If you are looking for Fender classic clean with reverb i would certainly check out the DRRI or even a used older DR on ebay.If you have alot of space a bigger amp you may want to consider is the Super reverb.I just picked one up on ebay (a 75 silverface )for slightly more than 600.Another consideration is the 59 Bassman RI. I picked up an older reissue for under 400 at a local store. These amps sound awesome when cranked and clean up real well.I know Buddy Guy used a bassman exclusively for years. The Super Reverb was instrumental in alot of SRVs music. Its a great Blues amp, but you need to have the room to open it up.

You get what you pay for. Do your research. I would look at the reissues or used Silver Face Fenders. They are a lot more reliable than the Hot Rod Series. I have a HRDdlx so I speak from experience.

Just remember Fender isn't the only company that makes amps. Try them all, Ampeg, Marshall, Epiphone, Peavey. Egnater amps are amazinng and versatile too. I you find an amp you like go home and Google for reliability issues with the amp. If it does take a pass and keep looking. Look for quality and reliability. I wish I did. If it's not gig worthy what good is it.

These have recently gotten my attention. They're using two features that I think all amp manufacturers should embrace ...

1) Variable wattage. The new renegade combos will switch between 18w and 65w.

2) Variable tubes. They will allow you to go from "California" style 6L6 to "British" EL34s.

The bottom line here is versatility. All the tones you want plus all the wattage you need for home studio, rehearsal, or gig.

I think this is the direction my next purchase is going ...

I'll second (or third) 63Supro's mention of Egnater... a good call.

I have been amazed at the excellent tone and versatility of my Eganter Rebel. It will do what a clean DRRI does, plus it will mimic a dimed tweed PRinceton, an 18 Watt Marshall and even do a nice Vox-y thing. Big enough to serve you, small enough to care, the Rebel is an amazing chunk of kit for the price.

I play mine through an open back cab with an Eminence Red Fang in it, and it kills.

I really like the Fender Supersonic and I dig the DRRI, but for the money I had to have one of these.

I tried the 20 watt Rebel and I had a hard time walking away from it. Beautiful tone form Jazz tones to scream. About the price of a HRdlx with the 1x12 cabinet.

I just really need to go to a store and play around with the different amps. This is really helpful though, I've never heard of Egnater before and will definitely check that out.

Does anyone know about how Two Rock amps are?

Two Rocks are awesome. Top-shelf spendy, but killer.

BTW, the Egnater we're talking about is available exclusively at Guitar Center.

I would recommend not wasting your money on any Fender re-issue. Especially the hot rod series. If you have a thousand, save a little more and look into all hand wired assembled tube amps. Here is two great builders that have excellent client service;

-SDG Vintage
-Parker

Just Google them and you will find them.

Good luck & enjoy
