Fender Twin Amp Pro Tube series.

Well I was playing and all of a sudden it started buzzing extremely loud!
So I turned it off checked the tubes and turned it back on and all seemed well again.
After a while bam out of nowhere this super loud buzz!
I unplugged everything and put it on standby and flicked on the Standby switch and still buzz. Back on SB then checked each tube one at a time and turned the amp back on and still buzz. I repeated this procedure with every tube and still the buzz. I did not have anything plugged in and it did not matter where the volume was set the buzz was just as loud. So I reached for the 1/4 power switch and flicked it to 1/4 power and the buzz level decreased but did not go away.

So I turned the amp off and waited a minute the turned it back on and there was no buzz. Realizing I left it on 1/4 power I merely lifted the switch back to full power and the buzz instantly came back. Volume control does not affect it and nothing plugged in and it is a very loud speaker rattling buzz.

This is not a normal kind of grounding sounding problem I have never heard anything like this before.. Scary! Almost had to peel me off the ceiling when it first happened!

I know there has to be someone out there in the world who has a thought or opinion.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Update 1: I just checked the amp this morning after having it off and unplugged all night. NO BUZZ. I flicked it to full power and nothing back to 1/4 nothing . Back to full power and I left it there for now running and 10 minutes later while I am writing this it is still not buzzing.

So if I end up taking it to a shop they are going to think I am crazy but I know there is something wrong somewhere!!

I am going to let it run a while this morning and then I will plug in and play for a bit and see if that gets it going or not and I will report back but in the meantime if anyone has any ideas please fell free to chime in!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Update 2: I had it turned on this morning for almost 1 1/2 hours and I mean fully on, not standby and it would not make the buzzing noise at all. I flicked the power switch a few times to see if that would start it like before and nothing.

I had to leave for a little while so now that I am back I am going to turn it on again and let it warm up for a while then I am going to plug in and rock out for a while and see if that is what gets it going.

Regardless of this mornings non incident I am terribly concerned because there was definitely something wrong as it was a cabinet rattling buzz that would not go away without shutting the amp down and like I said it would buzz with nothing at all plugged in and the amp volume would not change the buzz level at all. The only thing that affected how loud the buzz was is the power switch in the back reducing it to 1/4 power seemed to cut the buzz down to 1/4.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Update 3: I turned it on again as I said since I got home and after 15 minutes nothing happened so I plugged in and turned it up to a jamming volume and started playing for about 8 minutes and then I heard my overdrive sound go fizz for a second and I thought here we go. I played again for about 20 seconds and wammo off we go it almost sounds like a propeller airplane fired up it is loud and the volume has nothing to do with it!!!

I am not sure if it is heat? Vibration caused from actually playing? or Both?

Playing definitely seems to set it off though!!! Then you might as well throw on some goggles and a scarf!

Please help!

Thanks,

Barry

Barry,

I have no idea what is causing the problem except maybe a short somewhere. I have never even heard of a problem like this before. Now, I'm no amp tech so maybe someone has heard this or something like this before and have been able to find a simple solution. However the only advice I can give you would be to get this amp to a qualified tech. You might have to hang around for awhile to get the amp buzzing so that the tech knows exactly what the symptoms are. Hopefully it will be an easy and inexpensive fix.

Good Luck,

Russ
