I am wondering if anyone has had success with using an attenuator with the 57 twin reissue. The amp is quite loud, and I do like the clean sound.
For guitars, I swap out a Gibson Les paul 59 reissue, a Gibson Les Paul Deluxe, Gibson Es335, and a Strat with Jeff beck noiseless pickups.
For gain, I currently use two tube screamers, one for gain, first for drive, the second for additional drive. I have looked into maybe a Fulltone Fulldrive2 mosfet as an alternative.
I have learned that the bass and treble controls act somewhat like a gain,
in that by keeping the tone control on the bass to three, and the treble to five, you can get some more "sweat" out of the speakers.
Any alternate suggetions would be welcome.

I just installed a THD hotplate in my 57 twin - It is awsome - I can now get full benefit from the tubes - I only play in my house and small rooms. I was going to downsize to a delux or something smaller, but I coulndt part with the tone of my 57.. As you know this amp is ear splitting loud but with the hotplate you can really crank it while getting low volume.
I do not notice tone loss until the -16db setting, and even there the tone loss is not that much. I use the -16db setting when the family is home, and when I am alone I go up to -12 or -8db with no neighbor complaints. I highly recommend one - make sure you get the red one(4 ohms) if you are buying THD.
Cheers
Joe

I have a CS 57 Twin Tweed amp also but I know very little about electrical things. The spec sheet says the amps ohms are 4 but the speakers section says 8 ohms. Can you explain to me what this means? Is it 8 ohms because there are two 4 ohm speakers or are each of the speakers 8 ohms? Thanks for helping a dummy!

Nevermind! I've got it now! Thanks!

Had the hotplate installed.
I personally thought there was too much tone loss, when compared to
original. Took one of the rectifier tubes out.
bought a Fulltone "mosfet" pedal. Perfect.

You have two 8 ohm speakers in parrellel so that give yous a total dropped load of 4 ohms.

I agree with you about the Hotplate. I can't deal with the tone loss. THe more you attenuate with the Hotplate you start to get a sizzle type tone as well. You probably took a power tube out which drops the power in half but you also need to make sure that you don't have an impedence mismatch when doing this because your output impedence drops in half when pulling a power tube.

I forgot to mention that I did put my twin back to it's original configuration, minus the one tube. I did get the THD - red - 4 ohm
as recommended thru the manufacturer.
The amp tech that put it together knew I was going to be back.
He heard what I heard - the loss of tone degradation.
I have to say that the Fulltone mosfet is quite a gadget.

No one has posted here in awhile. I own a 57 reissue and since the first gentleman started this topic the twinlux (?) came out. Supposedly a 57 twin with an attenuator and a switch to run just one speaker.....plus a trem I guess... I wonder what Fender did to the amp what attenuator are they are using. Does anyone know? Would be nice if one could buy a kit from them to add some of these items to ones amp. Would an amp repair person be able to order such items??

thanks

E-mail Consumer Relations and ask for a schematic. They'll send you one if it is available.
